Gianni Infantino has said FIFA will examine expanding the World Cup by a further 16 nations to a 64-team tournament ahead of its next edition in 2030. The 2030 tournament will be spread across six nations and three continents: Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay are scheduled to host one match apiece at the start of the competition, with the remaining games split between Morocco, Portugal and Spain. @andrew_wiebe @downthebyline yeah, I’d be ok if he doesn’t give a card to either, but I don’t think it’s some miscarriage of justice that a clear flop was booked.

People have said they want diving out of the game for so long and still hate the player being given a yellow for clear simulation.

@andrew_wiebe @downthebyline Overall, I agree with your point here on VAR, but I’m also ok being harsh on simulation. My only complaint is that it has not been consistently refereed more harshly this tournament. Ultimately, if you flop on a yellow card, I struggle to feel too sympathetic.

@downthebyline @benwright I’d just say go find me simulation yellows called at midfield on inconseqential plays. The beauty of refereeing is you don’t ALWAYS have to referee with the harshest version of the law in mind.

So, VAR steps in to give Embolo a second yellow because the referee made the wrong decision in the first place to book Paredes? If it was just a foul, not a yellow, it’s not reviewable.

@EvertonnCA @tombogert yeah, I think the video review process is weird and not straightforward, but if it is called a dive in real time and given a yellow card, I think that subjectively to the correct call. the standard for a yellow card doesn’t change simply because you’re already on a booking.

@benwright @tombogert The ref is forced to second yellow because of his initial error and the review process, not because of the desire to call simulation by the nature of the play itself, otherwise Argentina would be playing with 7 men. If simulation was penalized elsewhere I’d agree with you.

@tombogert when the ref is doing his job properly? I don’t know, bro, it felt like a pretty clear dive and the replays make it look even worse. I have zero issue with that being called, and if you’re calling simulation, it’s supposed to be a yellow card.

@tombogert I’m all for scaling back VAR usage (and have been all tournament) but don’t have much sympathy for a player pretty clearly diving while already on a yellow.
