New in LGS@50 in '‘Change? Decay? Promise?: fifty years of local government cultural services in the UK' @bethanyrex &Clive Gray show how ideological preferences of different administrations have created a highly uncertain&challenging operating environment tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Lovely to see my work with @Peter_Soc cited in this think-piece linked to the @BritishAcademy_ cultural infrastructure project. Feel like I only ever tweet about that article which is funny what with it being an unexpected lockdown project.

. @LGAcomms think piece—The case for "cultural infrastructure" @michaelkenny_, @OJGarling & @StephCoulter8 highlight the value & impact of culture, heritage & sport not only economically but also in shaping people’s sense of wellbeing & local attachment. local.gov.uk/topics/culture…

Does anyone know of any reflections or academic source material that deals with museums and the COVID-19 pandemic?

Great to see cuts to culture being discussed in @guardian but these averages create a false picture of similarity. As my work w/ @Peter_Soc shows, the real story is not about uniform cuts but variation and thus deepening inequalities in service provision. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

Analysis by @guardian shows between 2010-11 & 2022-23 real terms council spending fell in all areas bar social care: - cultural services cut by 43%, - roads & transport by 40% - housing by 35% - planning & development by a third And more planned cuts ahead…

@bethanyrex @DrJennie_Morgan I'd like to join the conversation, if I may. I'm starting to think about what this means for the management of volunteers in museums.

@HECreativEcon thanks - slow progress (new parent, etc.) - i've already done the research, so it'll be about museums - desperately need more work on libraries though. Wonder if @DrAliceCorble knows anyone doing this?

@bethanyrex looking forward to reading it ... can you also start with library closures... as that has been forgotten? who needs libraries, who need museums...

@FionaCandlin @tootinghistory the west hill building (where the museum was when it was run following the hintze donation) is now leased to a nursery - the collections remain in storage in the basement

Hello @tootinghistory I'm trying to find out what happened to the old wandsworth Museum building. Do you know what it's being used for now, if anything?
