@griffingulledge I think in addition to the costs involved, the graduated license restrictions have tempered excitement around a license. Half the fun of getting your license was to pile as many of your friends as possible into the car, turn the radio up and disappear from adult supervision.

I was just talking to someone about this the other day. The complete indifference that students in our youth ministry have to driving never fails to shock me, and it affects our ability to even get them together in person.

Yet another friend with a child turning 16 next week. Hasn’t gotten a learner’s permit. Zero interest in a driver’s license. I keep hearing this same story. What’s WRONG with these kids?!?! On my 16th birthday, my mom took me out of school to take my driving test. Same for everyone I knew. Even if you couldn’t afford your own car, you could beg the use of the family station wagon occasionally. Freedom. Independence. Heck, privacy on a date! Are these kids giving all that up for scrolling TikTok and an occasional Uber?

@griffingulledge @TolbertOBU I’m not sure Dune is going to have the lasting impact. Although the special effects of the first Star Wars movies were crude by today’s standards, it captured a generation’s attention and created a franchise worth billions.

@ThomRainer While I understand the and agree with the results of this survey, I choose to attend a congregation with a dynamic video message from a well educated and well prepared speaker rather than a mediocre message from a poorly prepared and unqualified speaker.

@AbuseClergy @bobsmietana @AP I believe many churches will be facing a crisis. Between poor abuse prevention practices and deferred maintenance issues insurance claims have risen dramatically. Premiums will rise resulting in more deferred maintenance because of lower giving. Possible death spiral coming.

@bobsmietana @AP I believe you’ve hit on a story that will continue to evolve. We have spoken to this many times over the last several years, that if denominations and independent churches won’t put strong clergy sexual abuse prevention policies in place, insurance companies should force them to!

@bobsmietana @RNS I think it’s very possible it could get worse as churches spend what savings they have on insurance premiums and further defer maintenance resulting in more claims. Facilities and programs cost real money to maintain and insure that churches can no longer raise.

@AbuseClergy @bobsmietana I understand your frustration. Part of my job is reviewing churches’ abuse policies for insurability, and far too many of them don’t do effective background checks because of cost and insist that church leadership be gatekeepers before any mandated reporting.

@bobsmietana I’ve maintained for years church insurance companies should require to keep coverage from being canceled, churches must post at each doorway, insurance company approved posters that detail what child and adult clergy sexual abuse is, to educate congregants on what to watch for!

@kateshellnutt Background checks are the bare minimum standard for screening and yet in the work I do reviewing organizations’ abuse prevention programs for insurability I see far too many programs that do not include even this basic first step often because they don’t want to spend the money.
