@hunterbaker Although the movie emphasized it more and gave it a label, I recall the theme of hospitality being a major part of the book. I will say having read the book recently really help make the movie make more sense.

My take on the Odyssey: Zeus's law is a major theme of the film, but I (not an expert on the classical world) do not recognize it as Greco-Roman. It seemed like Christian morality imported into the time of the Odyssey. Is Nolan trying to get his viewers to consider Christian morality without running up against their resistance to the thing called by its proper name? Odysseus is a seriously conflicted character. Maybe he's like everyone in the sense that his choices vary tremendously in terms of their moral worthiness. What is different about this narrative is that he experiences consequences in a very deep and painful ongoing fashion. There's also attention paid to the problem of leadership. Does a leader tell the truth? Does a leader tell people what they need to hear? What if the leader leads people astray despite good intentions? Will anything be better if the people seize control from the leader or will they likewise blunder badly, maybe even worse? The film is generally not encouraging on this score, but I think it tries to lead us to some higher level of morality in the belief that if the moral compass is right we won't make such bad decisions. One thing is clear. Christopher Nolan is the one filmmaker in America who can deliver a huge box office result without a franchise such as Marvel, DC, or any of a number of pre-existing properties. Whatever he makes, people want to see. He can do Batman. He can do 20th century Manhattan Project. He can do crime as with Memento. He can do Greek mythology. Whatever it is, people are going to it.

@griffingulledge @bgleason I agree with that. The first trilogy was a different league than Disney's stuff. Although Star Wars Land in Orlando was awesome last month.

@bgleason @TolbertOBU You can’t recreate something that was a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s when there was far less content available. At the same time, it could have standalone greatness and not destroy itself through terrible use of its intellectual property like everything Disney has done.

I don’t think the Star Wars comparisons are right. These movies are way better than Star Wars.

We went to a fireworks show tonight and at one point I looked around and realized of the many thousands of people gathered, hardly any had their phone out recording or taking pictures. We were just watching it and experiencing it. Nature is healing.

@jaredcornutt Good advice. But even if you don't feel the call to be a pastor, spend time with your grandparents. I would give anything to visit with my grandad about the day I just had.

One piece of advice I would give to younger men who desire the office of pastor: if you can, spend a lot of time with your grandparents now. Go sit with them. Listen to them. Do it while they’re still here. You’re going to spend a lot of time in living rooms with people who are much older than you. You need to learn how to listen well and how to speak with them thoughtfully. Sometimes, like I did today, you’ll sit with someone for what will likely be the last time, and they’ll look to you for comfort as they prepare for what’s next. So spend time with your grandparents. It will prepare you for ministry in ways you can’t fully understand now but will one day. And even more than that, you’ll never regret the time you spent with them.
