Asking hospitals and health facilities to operate in conditions that can constitute negligence and make them liable is absolutely wrong.

“Patients facing medical emergencies must be received and given help, if even under makeshift conditions. You don’t need to have a comfortable bed to save a patient.—No patient must be turned away from any health facility” —President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the Ministry of Health to issue guidelines against the unacceptable “No bed syndrome” He reiterated that patients must be attended to and given emergency medical attention in high risk situations.

A doctor will set up a makeshift bed and treat a patient in an inappropriate setting. If something goes wrong because of that environment, the doctor will be sued. In court, a lawyer will simply ask if that was standard practice and the doctor could be liable. Unacceptable!!!

A hospital of KATH's size shouldn't need to refer patients to Korle Bu, but because of equipment limitations, patients are being sent all the way from the Ashanti Region to Accra.

There was no mention of allocating funds to renovate existing facilities to meet emergency care needs but rather doctors should keep improvising. KATH for instance needs a long overdue facelift

@bidibidon That's the biggest issue, people with smart phones are quick to snap patients being treated on the floor or chairs in the hospital for public ridicule, then they turn around to ridicule same health professional should they refuse to improvise with same limited resources.
