Folks this is an awful result. That said, winning a referendum is extraordinarily difficult. If it’s not bipartisan, it’s almost fatal. Add to that the fact that this was the first referendum in the post- truth era:, the era of poorly regulated social media.

We said this 2 weeks ago but it bears repeating again today. In Australia, women: - pay almost half the taxes; - fund almost half of all goods and services purchases (and make more than half the purchasing decisions); - consume half the media output; and - make up more than half the voters. Yet because sport and the politics around it is utterly controlled here by powerful misogynist men, more than half of the taxpayer-funded sports stadiums in this country refused to accommodate the playing requirements of the women of the #WorldCup2023. And they were helped in doing this by the silence and past negligence of governments at all levels who funded stadiums but put no fair conditions on their use, and by the silence and complicity of the big companies which sponsor sport but ensure 95% of those dollars go to men’s sport. And of course, by the complete silence of the mainstream media, because NO media will address the unfairness of women’s sports coverage since they’re also owned or controlled by disgusting misogynists and since their biggest funders are the peak sporting bodies (particularly the @AFL) and the companies who fund the AFL and other men’s sports organisations. This means only a relatively small percentage of Australia’s population will be able to watch the #Matildas play the upcoming World Cup Finals series. The losers are the girls and women in most Australian states, and the men who care about them and appreciate good sport but don’t decide the worth of it based on the genitals of those involved. We’ll block you if you reply that the women couldn’t have the MCG or Marvel Stadium because the soccer authorities needed the venues for so much time before and after matches. If there were a men’s soccer World Cup in Australia, governments would force those stadiums to make themselves available. Besides, there are plenty of Aussie Rules venues empty every weekend which could have been used more this year to accommodate the needs of this women soccer tournament. In fact, the REAL reason those stadiums weren’t made available is because the Australian men in charge of the codes which control those venues are both jealous of women getting any sporting attention, and angry at soccer itself getting sporting attention which might take away from their own power. Yet those men preside over organisations hugely funded by women’s taxes and women’s purchases and should have no right to restrict access in this way. Women literally PAY THEIR FUCKING WAGES. If women’s sport doesn’t get more of the sponsorship funding and media attention it needs and consumers are proving they want, people will be forced to vote with their feet, their wallets and their votes to change this dire and hugely sexist situation. But the first step is being AWARE of how much women’s sport is hated and ignored in this country, and to get ANGRY and determined to change it. Are you in?
