Antoine Semenyo.
The reported interest from Chelsea in Antoine Semenyo took me by surprise.
This is not because Antoine Semenyo wouldn’t present an upgrade to our current attacking options, but because the club invested in two left wingers last summer for close to £90 million.
It is also worth remembering that Geovany Quenda is joining in the summer, and some reports when the deal was first announced suggested that Chelsea saw him primarily as an option on the left wing.
Antoine Semenyo player has reached another level for Bournemouth this season, and I suspect the £65 million release clause presents a market opportunity of sorts.
Even despite this, I see this potential deal as a slightly uncharacteristic ‘win now’ signing, especially in the January window.
To be clear — I am taking everything with more than a pinch of salt, because these are only initial links and there have been clear reports that Chelsea don’t anticipate major January business.
Additionally, it would surprise me if Semenyo was brought in without at least one Chelsea attacker going out on loan or permanently.
Tyrique George is a clear option, and would generate pure profit, but I suspect that he may not be the only one that has to leave to create a spot for him.
If this transfer does happen, I think it is fair to suggest it might a tacit admission that Jamie Gittens is a little too raw and needs further development before becoming a suitable LW option at Chelsea.
I am sure there will be plenty of twists and turns with this deal, especially given that Semenyo has plenty of suitors, but these are my thoughts on the initial links.
