@ModestTeacher I hated fractions as a kid. Band taught me fractions. I went on to become the drum major my junior and senior year, playing trombone, tuba, and baritone during concert season. I now teach middle school math (7th, 8th, A1) and tell this story. If I can do it, anyone can!

@AndrewElgert @MrDanielBuck The attorneys were involved on both sides, and it was not pretty. For this student, as a separate board, we also recommended separation from the school. The student’s parents had appeal rights, etc. Ultimately, a settlement was reached that included the student not returning.

@AndrewElgert @MrDanielBuck the student’s disability. If the behavior which caused the suspension is a result of the student’s disability, and the student will be out of school past 10 days, then the LEA has to continue paying for the student’s education. I was a member of one of these “boards.” 2/

Wait, wait, wait Hold on Per IDEA (the federal law governing special ed) if a kid has an IEP or is labeled special ed, they cannot be suspended for more than 10 days in a year?! Kid throws a desk. Hits another. Gets suspended. Does it again and admin hands are tied?!

@ModestTeacher I (MS math teacher and Base Camp Leader [lead teacher]) had a conversation this morning with our head of school and HS math teacher (and Base Camp Leader) about this very thing this morning. We all agree that we have to find the correct balance not just use tech for tech’s sake.

Had a great convo today with a MS principal who spoke about the over reliance of technology in the classroom. The tide is turning.
