Not all slurs carry equal weight, and even the same sentence can vary in offensiveness based on context.
For example, saying “nice ass, baby” will get you a smile when speaking to a stripper at a club, but will get you your ass kicked if said to a man’s 9 year old daughter.

WELL I was assaulted by a schizo homeless guy today in Toronto. I was walking to the grocery store when he started stalking me. I tried to get away from him but it didn’t work. He grabbed me, pinned me against a fence, and then tried to break my hand to steal my phone. Three people passing by helped save me. The police were quick and kind, but the officer I spoke with told me this guy had been arrested for attacking people repeatedly in the past month, and “fair warning, a judge will probably let him out by tomorrow morning.” 🫠 lovely system we got goin on here folks

I know there is some precedent with "fighting words", but doesn't that also need to include threats of violence to justify reacting with violence? It was my understanding that "fighting words" were very narrow. Do racial slurs automatically count as "fighting words" that people can legally assault others for using in public? If yes, what words are on this list, specifically? If there are words that are so taboo no one can utter them I would like to see them listed in law.

According to the zoo, one turtle stole the other’s food 120 years ago, and since that day they became enemies.
