This is Korosho Secondary School in Kilifi County, where many families struggle to keep their kids in school, hoping that they will be the ones to break generational cycles of poverty. On Monday, 26th January, however, this hope was dashed for several students expected to complete their final year of high school this year, after they were sent home for lacking school fees. To make matters worse, the principal of the school is alleged to have earlier denied students time off to go fill some bursary forms. Following on from the recent debacle of over 800,000 junior secondary students failing to join school due to lack of fees, the sending home of students set to finish high school this year is certain to be the next scandal hitting the education sector. The travesty being visited upon Kenyan children by an incompetent and insensitive government must be condemned by everyone who cares about the future of these vulnerable youth. The hapless students now languishing at home and watching their dreams fade with each passing day are now calling on their leaders to act decisively so that they can continue with their education. Parents of students at Korosho Secondary are asking Kilifi North MP, Owen Baya, what the bursary fund is for if their children cannot benefit from it. How is your MP managing the constituency bursary fund? #SemaUkweli

Story by Laylah Were, Citizen Journalist Residents of Ikolomani are living in fear as competing interests battle over gold deposits in the area. Tension remains high, and uncertainty grips the community as their dreams of reaping wealth from the precious gold under their feet turn into tears of pain and loss. A public participation forum convened recently by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to gather views on the proposed Isulu–Bushiangala gold mining project by Shanta Gold turned chaotic. The meeting, which was part of the legally required Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process, was disrupted when groups described by police as 'hired goons' stormed the venue, leading to chaos and deadly clashes with security officers. The incident exposed deep tensions surrounding the mining project, particularly between local residents, the county government, and national agencies. The main players in the dispute include NEMA, which organized the forum; Shanta Gold, the company seeking to develop the large-scale mining project; the Kakamega County Government, led by Governor Fernandes Barasa; state security agencies and local residents - many of whom rely on small scale mining for their livelihoods. The mining company and the national government view the project as a major investment opportunity and part of broader efforts to formalize the mining sector. During the disruption of the NEMA meeting, gunfire erupted as police attempted to regain control. At least three people were shot dead, according to a witness, although some reports indicate the death toll could have been higher. Several other, including police officers and journalists, were also injured. Police maintain that the deceased were part of a violent group that attacked them, forcing them to respond with live ammunition. The exact circumstances under which the victims lost their lives remain under investigation. Politically, Governor Fernandes Barasa confirmed the deaths and ordered investigations into the incident while also engaging national government officials in the aftermath. The Mining Principal Secretary, Harry Kimtai, has been involved in consultations related to the project and has emphasized coordination between the national and county governments. Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Hassan Ali Joho, has also been reported to have held discussions with the county leadership following the violence. Although police have alleged that local politicians may have sponsored the goons who disrupted the meeting, no specific politician has been conclusively linked to the violence so far. NEMA has maintained that the forum was part of its statutory mandate to conduct public participation before approving any mining-related environmental licenses. The State Department for Mining, meanwhile, has reiterated its commitment to orderly development of the sector, promising structured engagement with communities, compensation frameworks and collaboration with county governments, even as civil society groups call for independent investigations and a halt to mining activities until underlying grievances are addressed. #SemaUkweli @HassanAliJoho @KimtaiHarry @BarasaFernandes @national_mining @MiBeMa_2022 @NemaKenya @DCI_Kenya

Gender dynamics matter in agriculture because productivity, equity, and resilience are shaped by who has access to resources, opportunities, and decision-making power. In Kenya, agriculture contributes over 20% of national GDP and remains the backbone of rural livelihoods. Across the sector, men and women participate differently along the value chain, influenced by access to land, finance, technology, and markets. While women make up the majority of the agricultural labour force (estimated at over 70%), they continue to face systemic constraints, including limited land ownership (about 10% hold land titles), reduced access to credit, and lower participation in leadership and policy spaces. These disparities affect not only women but also the overall performance and sustainability of the agricultural sector as a whole. Tomorrow as from 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM, CGA, in partnership with Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA), hosts an X-Space on Gender and Agribusiness under the theme "Gender and Agribusiness: Building Inclusive, Productive and Resilient Value Chains". The discussion will explore how gender roles and inequalities influence productivity, income, and food systems and what practical, evidence-based solutions can advance the sector. Among the team will be Doris Gakii, Gender & Development Specialist, who will join other panellists, offering insights and engaging directly with your questions. #TogetherWeGrow #makingmarketsworkbetterforfarmers #16DaysOfActivism #genderinagriculture

We might not see this coming, but it’s happening girls in Nairobi schools are still lacking consistent access to sanitary towels. We’ve supported a few schools to bridge the gap, but we call on the Government to step in and do more.
