A dramatic rescue unfolded at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, on Saturday, July 26, 2026, when El Niño-fueled 10-foot waves battered the coastline. What began as a normal beach day quickly turned into a terrifying moment after a 10-year-old boy was swept into the violent surf. Witness Scott Vander Dussen was filming nearby when he saw the child being pulled away by the powerful waves. He immediately alerted a nearby lifeguard. Without wasting a second, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder ran straight into the rough water. Scott later said, “I saw the lifeguard just run straight out into the water, and he dove in, setting fear aside.” Ryder fought through wave after wave while holding tightly onto the frightened boy. Every time a huge breaker crashed over them, he ducked under the water and came back up, never letting go. Scott described it by saying, “The lifeguard just had a gorilla grip on that young man, held him from getting swept back out.” Nearby beachgoers also tried to help, but the rough surf was too powerful. A second lifeguard eventually reached Ryder and the boy, helping bring the exhausted child safely back to shore. The boy was checked by paramedics and was reunited with his family without any injuries. The rescue was one of at least 25 carried out in Santa Cruz County that day. The video went viral, and Eric Trump posted on X: "Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!" President Trump then responded, writing on Truth Social and X: "We're going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!" Ryder reportedly returned for another shift the very next day. Looking back, Scott Vander Dussen said, “If the lifeguards weren't there, he wouldn't have gone home that night.”
