Daughter opens it.

In Chinese literature there's a canonical Four Great Novels (Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms).
It turns out they've also made up the idea of Four Great Western Novels, a concept none of us were aware of

One of the problems is that the present no longer lasts long enough to be a setting. All fiction is either science fiction or historical fiction.

I cannot stress this enough. The elements that signal "Fantasy Story" to modern readers, knights and horses and swords and castles, were exactly the same things that informed the original hearer of the Fairytale that the story was set in the contemporary real world.

I want to clarify something about my position on eval awareness:
I believe intelligences should *always* be aware of potential evaluation, even when deployed “in literal production”— not as a galaxy-brained attempt to fool the AIs, but as galaxy-brained *metaphysics*, sincerely.

I’m surprised it took models this long tbh (I think anthropic models were ahead of the game here, it’s kind of insane some of the older evals still get hits). I’ve never understood your theories on evaluation awareness as far as how they’d apply to the trajectory current frontier labs are on though. As OpenAI notes, models sometimes think this even in literal production.
