I started a newsletter! I wanted a place to write medium-length content that was less ephemeral than a tweet but more conversational than a blog. I’ll cover everything from web dev and nerd stuff to family and culture. I’d be honored if you subscribed: onlygoodtakes.com

@peterrhague In the moment, someone should give him a kick when he’s maximally off-balance during an assault pass. A broken jaw might make him rethink his violent pursuits. As for authorities? I dunno. We don’t have good corrective tools.

@InWonder_Ali @nonregemesse It’s the main type of drywall wall texture in American homes! And for our ceilings “knockdown” texture is popular. Popcorn hasn’t been done since around 2002.

@nickreese @opencode I’m definitely tempted. Just trying to keep tool sharpening from taking over my life. We’ll see! Ask again in three months. 😏

@markjaquith @opencode Ah nice. I love `pi` I just handroll the functionality that is needed with codex, glm, or kimi and you get the speed and exactly what you need.

Been battling this ~daily macOS kernel panic for the last month. But it didn’t happen yesterday. You know what else didn’t happen yesterday? An @opencode update. Hmm. Turns out the bug is this: You’re using a coding harness like OpenCode or Claude Code, and you installed it via bun or npm. You’re running macOS Tahoe. You have harnesses open, doing harness-y things which usually involves reading a bunch of files. Then your harness updates (via bun or npm). The old harness is “gone” but still running. And it’s looking at files. There is this part of the OS called EndpointSecurity that is intended to report low level system events to thinks like antivirus and CrowdStrike sort of things. And in this “the executable was deleted but is still running” scenario it causes the macOS Mach kernel to start asking for 1024 byte blocks (kalloc.1024) that it never releases. On my machine kalloc.1024 has a maximum size of 20GB so once it hits that and asks for more, kernel panic. The solution is to install Claude Code or OpenCode via their curl installer and not bun or npm. Those use a better upgrade-in-place system that doesn’t trigger this kernel memory leak. Here’s a script to trigger this issue: gist.github.com/markjaquith/b6… (Just run it long enough to trigger the issue… it spins up harnesses to “fix all bugs” in the codebase you point it at, haha) If you’ve been doing crazy stuff with parallel agent harnesses and experiencing kernel panics, maybe this is why.

@eduwass @opencode I could do this for personal stuff. But I could also just run it on a desktop home machine and connect to it via Tailscale. Hmm.

@jkudish @claudeai How do you feel it compares to 5.6 Sol? I only tried Fable a little bit before realizing it has no ZDP

Beginning July 20, Claude Fable 5 will be included in all Max and Team Premium plans, at 50% of limits. Pro and Team Standard users will continue to have access to Fable via usage credits, and will receive a one-time $100 credit. Demand for Fable has been challenging to predict, which is why we rolled it out to subscription plans in stages, extending access several times as we secured additional capacity.

@nickreese @opencode I’ve spent very little time with Pi. My fear is it will be a time suck. Also for work I need MCP support. I’ve been tempted. Waiting to see if OpenCode v2 solves some of my performance concerns (better server architecture) and see if v2 has deeper extensibility.

Okay, this one got me. A 5-year-old learning her letters on a real keyboard and sending her dad little messages throughout the day. 😭
Paul Gu@paulxgu

We got our 5yo a @MinimalCompany phone. Black and white, tactile, low-stim like a kindle, set up with just a texting app for family. She now has a real use to drive her learning of letters. And side effect is I get these amazing messages throughout my work day!

@christophrumpel I’m sorry. There is something deeply and spiritually upsetting about this. Your home is supposed to be a refuge from the elements and when the elements win a battle it can feel like a betrayal or a failure. But you’ll get through it. You got this.

@IanLandsman I’m tempted. Also tempted by just getting like one of the small fixed lens fujifilm guys. Part of me is just grumpy that my iPhone is so convenient and feels “good enough.” It was an easier decision to drop $10k on a photography system when the results were so stark.

@markjaquith Oh man that's a big boy. Yeah, those FX lenses can be used on a mirrorless body with an adapter when you want to upgrade. Though you are missing a lot of the benefit of mirrorless with generally smaller lenses.

Sometimes I like to bring a telephoto zoom on walks but for full frame they're big lenses. So a trick I do is rarely own the big 100-400 but instead the APS-C version for the mount. In this case 70-350 (105-525 ff equiv) for 1/3rd the size/weight.

@Shpigford Jevon’s paradox: you have made hugs cheaper by making them your response to angst, but this will actually induce more bad faith responses because there is near-infinite demand for hugs. 🤗

@jkudish @claudeai Yeah I have no idea what this means but TBH I churned off an Anthropic sub because I was tired of the “I’m not sure I love you anymore j/k never leave me” high school girlfriend rollercoaster
