The Trump Administration just bulldozed an 1000 year-old Native American site to build a border wall in Arizona. The carvings there were sacred to native tribes and had been undisturbed for a millennium.

@BurghandBklyn @sola_chad His heavenly Father, who the Jewish observers would commonly identify as God, or Yahweh. Modern analogy would be interoffice communication.

@cpchambe @DeaconStrat @trad_west_ I'm sure that'll convince skeptics, convince thousands in short order, and even inspire men to go to their deaths spreading the news of his return.

@bittercling @cpchambe @trad_west_ Found it! Here’s part: “he appeared to Fred and then to his old posse. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred fans at once, most of whom are still living, but some are dead. Then he appeared to Ralph, then to all the Sun Records gang. Last of all He appeared to me.”

@cpchambe @trad_west_ If they were identical, you would claim it proves collusion of accounts. Just with any event, witness accounts will vary, but can still point to a common truth of the event.

@bittercling @trad_west_ Each gospel probably originally functioned as a church’s sole testament of Jesus’s life, only later were they brought together. Traditions are different. Who went to the tomb? Mary Magdalene, Mary, & Salome? Just Mary Magdalene + “the other Mary”? Only Mary M? A larger group?

@bittercling @trad_west_ Paul doesn’t say that. Those claims come from later writings like the Gospel later attributed to Luke and Gospel later attributed to John written decades after 1 Corinthians & within a religious movement were resurrected was already accepted as doctrine.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ So, there are no countering accounts, got it. Poor biographers throughout time; throw out your works because they weren't written in real time.

@bittercling @trad_west_ We don’t have contemporary record of any witnesses, disciple, believer or not. The burden of proof isn’t on critics to produce counter-eyewitnesses. It’s on the one claiming a dead person returned to life and appeared to many people. It’s notable it didn’t get recorded at time.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ Could be, I don't have a lot of insight to that particular event to share. I'd prefer to spend classroom hours on reading, writing, arithmetic, and the Gospel.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ I wouldn't, as it doesn't have an obvious significance to humanity, but feel free to lobby your local school board to get it added to the curriculum.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ There's good reason to believe Mark was written earlier than that. For instance, Acts (written by Luke) ends with Paul under house arrest in Rome, which one can infer is because it was written before Paul was executed; and Mark's Gospel preceded Luke's. Yes, eyewitnesses agree.

@bittercling @trad_west_ 1 Corinthians was written 20–25 years after the event claimed. Gospel were originally anonymous texts whose names only attached later, which were written decades after Paul’s letters. These are independent eyewitness depositions, they show clear literary interdependence

@cpchambe @trad_west_ Paul gave a listing of specific people Jesus had appeared to, even writing of the "more than five hundred" that many were still living, so there would have been plenty of people available for cross-examination by any who wished to do so.

@bittercling @trad_west_ Mass sightings generally ambiguous phenomena (lights, shapes, distant objects). Detailed extraordinary claims (abductions, resurrection appearances, conversations with beings) generally only occur in small, unverified, semi-private experiences. Never both. Paul gives no details.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ They didn't claim to see something they couldn't identify. They wrote that they had seen the risen Jesus, spoke to him, and touched him!

@bittercling @trad_west_ Saying “seeing something you can’t identify isn’t significant” undercuts your own argument. People can see real things but misinterpret and incorrectly identify what they see. So even if >500 claimed to see a resurrected Jesus, you’ve showed reason to doubt their explanation.

@cpchambe @trad_west_ Interesting hypothesis. The writings all came after the Church was established and teachings had begun, when people who had observed all these events were still around. Are there non-Christian eyewitness accounts that contradict the accounts of Jesus' resurrection?

@bittercling @trad_west_ So what you actually have is a small number of later texts within and based on the same tradition, not hundreds of independent, contemporaneous eyewitness reports. That’s very different from “multiple independent eyewitnesses writing firsthand accounts”
