Dear Midwest, I’ve been in Tokyo for the past week for the @Olympics & I’ve noticed that my instinctual use of “Ope!” is universally understood by Japanese and other nationalities. Language barriers have been broken. 😉 @midwestern_ope

@arkm2563 @Libs_OfChicago My wife used to be trauma surgery resident at Sinai. Insane stories every goddamn night. Plenty of chest cracking. Best of luck to your daughter. 🫡

@Libs_OfChicago My daughter is an emergency nurse in Chicago. Memorial day weekend is the beginning of what they call trauma season. She says we are going to be cracking chests all weekend. 21 people shot last night. five cops got run over at another takeover on the westside.

I wish they were more widely celebrated as superstars… but I understand why they aren’t. There’s no audience in that operating room. Those unbelievable feats go unseen and are often more complex than accurately putting a ball through a hoop.

I know this gets debated all the time. NBA careers are shorter than most surgeons. There’s an audience…Etc etc. As a former pro athlete myself I support them making good money. (Sub NBA for any entertainment career) My point: the difference in societal impact is stark.

A neurosurgeon teamed up with an ENT surgeon to remove my wife’s brain tumor this week. Flawless intense life saving work. They’re absolute gods for what they do & deserve every bit of the comfortable salary they earn. Strange that they both make less than a rookie in the NBA.

@JosephKahn I absolutely do this and didn’t realize until reading this post. Being a dad makes all the selfishness and indulgence go away.

After being a dad, I feel guilty if I spend too much on myself on anything. It feels like I'm taking away from my family. Every dollar should be for them. This is how dad clothes exist. I try to keep my lunch under $20. I can get grocery sushi for $12. I can kill at Panda Express for $15. Just grilled a Costco steak for dinner I split in half ($8). It doesn't matter how much money I make, the primal level of guilt I feel spending money on myself turns me monastic. However, I love spending money on the family. The joy of providing for them is the only reason I make money. That is the joy of being a man: how little can you spend on yourself and how much can you give your family?

“The weatherman LIED!” was a common phrase I’d hear growing up when the forecast was wrong. People have really eased up on that. That’s progress.

...Meanwhile we reply to the attorney, saying we're pretty sure the records identified their client as the judge at the time of publication and the records have since been changed. The attorney replies: Oh, yeah. My client had the clerk change the record after your story ran.

I alerted the authorities to the Illegal lab at 850 I St, Reedley, CA 93654 in December 2022. It is one of the strangest and most under-reported biomedical scandals in recent memory. Again, I reported it after a whistleblower tip in December 2022, when a city code enforcement officer discovered the lab while investigating what looked like an unpermitted warehouse operation. Inside, they found refrigerators and freezers containing thousands of biological samples, medical equipment, and suspicious materials.and it was publicly revealed during the spring and summer of 2023, but the story’s deeper implications have been largely sanitized in mainstream reporting. A company called Prestige Biotech Inc., which had taken over operations from a defunct company called Universal Meditech Inc. When authorities went in, they discovered: About 30 refrigerators and freezers with thousands of vials labeled as containing things like E. coli, Hepatitis B and C, HIV, and other pathogens. Roughly 1,000 white mice, many of them dead, that were reportedly being used for some kind of laboratory testing. Unlabeled biological material—some unknown substances stored alongside reagents and chemicals. COVID-19 test kits and other diagnostic materials, many flagged as counterfeit or unapproved for sale in the U.S. Medical equipment and vials labeled with Chinese writing. Documents linking the operation to individuals and companies with addresses in China and Nevada, including the lab "discovered" in Las Vegas. This was in 2022!!!! The lead entity was Prestige Biotech, but it had no active business license in California. Its president was listed in corporate filings as a Chinese national, with correspondence addresses in China and Nevada. The operation appeared to be connected to Universal Meditech, a Fresno-based biotech firm that had its licenses suspended and recalled test kits after FDA violations. Reports suggested ties to entities with Chinese government-linked funding channels, though the media and authorities didn’t deeply investigate those connections after Gavin Newscum intervened. Data from shipping manifests suggested there are over 500 labs of a similar nature spread across the US.

The illegal bio lab just raided in Las Vegas was operated by the same LLC and Chinese nationals as the one discovered in Reedley, CA. Here's what we know about the Reedley lab from a highly disturbing report I requested by the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. It was run by an international fugitive from China named Jiabei "Jesse" Zhu. After running various state-connected companies in China, he moved to Canada, where he set up dozens of corporations to "steal valuable American intellectual property and unlawfully transfer" it to China. The Supreme Court of British Columbia found he committed "fraud on an epic scale," resulting in a $330 million judgment. He then fled to America, assumed the alias David He, and set up several more companies, including the one behind the bio lab. He was indicted in 2023 and has been in custody ever since, but his partner and other associates have not been. The Reedley lab was discovered in December of 2022, when a code inspector came upon a suspicious warehouse. Inside, she found many Chinese nationals "wearing white lab coats, glasses, masks, and latex gloves," along with "thousands of vials of biological substances" and 1,000 mice. It was later learned these were "transgenic" mice "genetically engineered to catch and carry the COVID-19 virus." A further inspection found "blood, tissue and other bodily fluid samples and serums" along with thousands of vials of "suspected biological material." Some of the vials were labeled with the names of infectious agents, while others were labeled in a "code" that was never deciphered. At first, the CDC refused to investigate, and even hung-up on local officials who asked for help. After Rep. Costa got involved, the CDC did an inspection and found "at least 20 potentially infectious agents, including HIV, Tuberculosis, and the deadliest known form of Malaria." Yet the CDC did not bother to test any samples, even those with unknown contents, making it "impossible for the Select Committee to fully assess the potential risks that this specific facility posed to the community." The Select Committee report calls this "baffling." Later, local officials discovered a refrigerator in the lab labeled “Ebola.” While the supposed purpose of the lab was to sell test kits, in fact all the company did was buy counterfeit kits from China and re-sell them in the United States. Thus, there was a "lack of apparent legitimate (or even profit-motivated criminal) motive in the operation of the illegal facility." Meanwhile, Jesse Zhu, its operator, was "receiving unexplained payments via wire transfer" from Chinese banks. The report concluded that "no one knows whether there are other unknown biolabs because there is no monitoring system in place." Now we know that there was at least one other, but we still don't know how many more. That is why it is critical for Congress to pass my bipartisan legislation, authored with Rep. Costa and Rep. Valadao, to find these labs and shut them all down.
