All you need to know about geopolitics you can learn in New York restaurants. I meet an Italian-American woman. She tells me, "You know, we in Italy, do not think you in Serbia are European. Albanians and Bosnians are Europeans, but you and Russians are not". She meant it in a cultural, not political, sense. It took me a bit aback, so I said nothing.

I am following closely the situation in Serbia and call upon everyone to refrain from further tensions. I am concerned that criminal charges are being sought against the Rector of Belgrade University. The EU is also following the blockade of the National Broadcaster RTS. Public media have the responsibility to work in the best interest of the public and provide space for all legitimate positions; they have the right - as all journalists do - to perform their duties free from any kind of pressure. I hope the current situation can be resolved through constructive dialogue and a democratic spirit. To exit the political impasse and divisions in society, Serbia should step up efforts to fight corruption and advance rule of law reforms, including strengthening media pluralism and electing the REM Council through a transparent and inclusive process, involving all relevant stakeholders. These reforms are also key to Serbia’s progress on its European path. The EU offers support, and I’m planning to travel to Serbia later this month to discuss this.

I had a constructive meeting with President @avucic We discussed concrete steps on Serbia’s EU path, the implementation of the Growth Plan and reiterated our expectation on a clear Serbian orientation towards the EU. I emphasised that enlargement is a whole of society process. This is not possible without strong civil society and independent media. It is the best way forward.
