My uncle loved his wife to a fault. They used to live abroad before finally relocating back home. My uncle is a well known chef over there, while his wife works in the tech field. He doesn’t let his wife do much in the kitchen, according to him, he actually enjoys watching her sit with her laptop. He literally does all the cooking, and it has never been a problem for them. When they relocated to Nigeria, somehow his family got wind that their son does most of the cooking. They called a family meeting, insisting that it is not a man’s place to cook, even though cooking is his profession…..

My cousin always used to say she couldn’t withstand that hot water press after childbirth, and I thought she was joking. When she had her first baby, her mum came for omugwo, but she and her husband made it clear there would be no hot water press. Her mum ended up making pepper soup for her every day and even warned her that she would end up with a protruding tummy. I don’t know how she did it, but her tummy is even flatter than mine, even though I don’t have kids.

I wash clothes for girls my own age to survive in school, and later they turn around complaining they can’t find a good husband — all while they struggle with basic household tasks as women. Well, at least I get paid for doing their laundry.
