Today, the Chancellor @RachelReevesMP will announce the Autumn Budget.
Today is also Economic Abuse Awareness Day. And it’s our hope that the budget delivers the investment needed to achieve the government’s ambition to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.
4.2 million women in the UK experienced economic abuse in the last year alone. And the devastating consequences can last a lifetime, with some women never free of the abuser’s control.
Today isn’t just about awareness. It’s about action.
And we must act now.

A staggering two in five younger women (aged 18-24) have experienced economic abuse - yet less than half identified their experience as abuse.
We must address this critical awareness gap to ensure that younger women can recognise economic abuse and access the support they need to thrive.

Black, Asian and other ethnically minoritised women are more than twice as likely to face economic abuse as White women. Alarmingly, 80% reported experiencing significant harm as a result.
Abusers deliberately exploit existing inequalities - including racism, cultural expectations, and barriers to support - to devastate the lives of victim-survivors.
Urgent change is needed to ensure services recognise these intersecting barriers and victim-survivors receive the support they need to reach safety.

This Friday, the Domestic Abuse (Safe Leave) Bill returns for second reading in Parliament.
This is a critical opportunity to support victim-survivors of domestic abuse, including those facing economic abuse.
Abusers deliberately trap victim-survivors by controlling access to money, sabotaging employment, and creating financial instability. Nearly 1 million women in the UK have been prevented from leaving a dangerous partner because of economic abuse. Many face an impossible choice between providing for themselves and their children or reaching safety.
Victim-survivors should not have to take annual leave to attend court. They should not face dismissal for calling in sick while fleeing with their children. And no one should fear losing their job just for seeking help.
The Bill proposes two weeks’ paid safe leave. It would give victim-survivors the time they need to get to safety, access support, and begin to rebuild, without risking their livelihoods.
We welcome these proposed changes and thank @alexmclabour for their tireless work on this issue.

Today marks the beginning of Debt Awareness Week, an opportunity to increase awareness of debt and the solutions available.
This week, we want to shine a light on the issue of coerced debt.
Perpetrators of economic abuse will often force or coerce victim-survivors into debt as a way of trapping them in a cycle of control. The impact of coerced debt can follow a survivor around for a lifetime.
Follow us for more on Debt Awareness Week 2025.

At 28, Nicola Harding left an abusive marriage with just a bin bag of belongings and no access to her own money. Her ex-husband controlled their joint account, denied her keys to their home, and restricted her finances, leaving her on the brink of financial ruin.
Today, Nicola is the CEO of a six-figure security consultancy, @WeFightFraud, advising the UK government on financial crime. Her story is a great reminder that rebuilding after economic abuse is possible.
