@jasonfried Also quite durable. My mother gave me hers and it still works just fine after 50 years, even if the plastics have yellowed a bit.

The original Cuisinart was peak interface/appliance design. Two perfect paddle buttons. One for ON that catches and stays down for continual operation. And one for PULSE/OFF that does exactly what it says. It doesn't stay down, it returns to reset when you let go. Hold it down as long as you want to pulse. Let go and it stops. Or just push it down to disengage ON, and turn it off. The description may sound a bit convoluted because of the dual purpose PULSE/OFF button, but when you use it it's absolutely obvious. And couldn't be better. Big flat toggle buttons under satisfying tension. Clear affordances. You push them down, not in. One click catches, one doesn't. You can use them with bare hands, oven mitts, fingers coated in slippery whatever. Doesn't matter. Plenty of surface area. Outstanding design. It's been all downhill from there.

@JohnDCook Isn’t it because it’s more (politically) useful as an absolute than as a crude measure full of internal contradictions?

"Everyone knows [pick your metric] is a crude measure, full of internal contradictions, but it's still useful. Nobody takes it as absolute." Then everybody takes it as absolute.

@blanchettejf @minz_anupam @FFmpeg Number and complexity of algorithms required to implement the codec. It's expected that complexity increases over time, but a human can only fit so much in his/her brain and thus fewer people really understand these new codecs. AI cannot fix this.

It's great to see ML bring a new generation to the world low level programming and optimisation! For many reasons (e.g exponential codec complexity) multimedia unfortunately has substantially larger barriers to entry compared to ten years ago.

@minz_anupam @FFmpeg In the old days, one person could reasonably implement a JPEG decoder in a day or a MPEG-1 decoder in a week. For H-264/VP9, that would take a month. For HEVC/AV1/VVC, we're talking 3-6 months. There are no signs of this implementation complexity tapering off in AVM or H267.

@YDesgagnes Absolument scandaleux. En plus d’être en colère, j’avais honte. Pourquoi est-ce qu’on doit tout enlaidir avec de la publicité? C’est sans rien dire de la narration inepte …

@MaryKenny4 It’s even worse than that. The response is « How can we stop the National Rally from gaining power, even if it involves making gimmicky alliances that will further prove to these voters that the system is rigged to prevent them from ever getting heard? »

The almost universal response to Marine Le Pen’s electoral victory has been “How can the National Rally be stopped?” Shouldn’t the question be asked: “What are the voters trying to tell us, through the due process of democracy?”

yeah yeah yeah, the author has a thing for steganography, but there's so much gold in this book, especially Chapter 4. If you take my "advanced topics in cryptography" module in autumn, you'll hear about it.

"Burdens of Proof: Cryptographic Culture and Evidence Law in the Age of Electronic Documents" by Jean-François Blanchette is underappreciated by cryptographers. Go read it: mitpress.mit.edu/9780262017510/…

@walterkirn @JoyceCarolOates An irrational distrust of her prolific output. She is a great writer, hugely deserving of the award. But over and over again in literary circles, you hear this suspicion. It's stupid and - in a conclusion I rarely draw - sexist. That kind of range and stamina are for men.

@blanchettejf (@UCLA) Concernant l’utilisation des #IAgénératives à l’Université : « Il y a 2 approches : - Incitative (Compétition de prompting, correction d’une base générée par l’#IA…) - Répressive (vérification de la preuve d’un travail élaboré sans l’aide de l’IA)
