Following up on this. Thank you. My FIL died last night at 2am surrounded by his whole family adoring, praying, and celebrating him for all the toil, sacrifice, and laughter he gave us. All he wanted in return was to be in charge of overseeing the chili pot. No sense of regret, just great loss. His was a death every man should want.

Airline pilots go to the simulator periodically to practice the various “Non-Normal” (that’s the actual term) events that are possible in the aircraft. (Military & most other professional pilots do, too). The frequency varies. For the airlines, the schedule is about every 9 months (there is a grace period), but if you are struggling (*not* failing – those people are not allowed to go fly) then they bring you back every 6 months. In the KC-10, it was quarterly. In both examples, it’s two days of simulators. Each day starts with a 2 hour pre-brief, discussing new information about the fleet, changes to procedures, reviews of general flying & aircraft systems knowledge as well as a review of the “profile” you’ll be flying in the simulator. Then there’s 4 hours in the simulator (w/ a short break in the middle), followed by a debrief period of no more than an hour or so. The profile varies. It’s basically the flight plan for the sim session, developed by the airline based on trends or recent events. They develop entirely new ones featuring different airports & non-normal events periodically. Now, they don’t just throw a profile together. In fact, profiles are developed using an incredibly detailed data set called “FOQA” (Flight Operations Quality Assurance, sounds like Foe-Kwah). FOQA is basically the data collected by the jet on every flight, compiled into a database. The jet doesn’t record everything…I *probably* couldn’t go into FOQA to find out how often pilots turn on the windshield wipers in Chicago, for example (but I might!). But if I wanted to know how often 737 pilots get 5 knots fast at Dallas with the flaps at 30° while below 500’ from the runway to see if it’s most common during day or night, then during what months…and then overlay the experience level of the crews who were flying it as well as the weather at the time of occurrence? No problem, we can pull all of it up by fleet & make a chart going back 10+ years to see if the trend is increasing or not. It’s an incredible tool. Anyway, the profiles will always include some basic things, like engine fires on takeoff & single-engine landings, etc., but will include anything else the safety department would like to address. The profiles further break down by goal. There is too much to do to just practice all of the non-normal events every time. So, at one 9 month sim, you will do a “Maneuvers Validation” (MV), then the next 9 month sim is a “Line Oriented Evaluation” (LOE). The MV is “Dial a Death” as we sometimes call it. It’s just a series of failures that you practice. The engine catches fire on takeoff, for example, and you fly out of it. We skip some of the realism like coordinating w/ Flight Attendants or Dispatch, but we do practice the associated checklists. At any point when the objective of the exercise is met, the sim instructor “freezes” the sim, resets it anywhere they want (“dials up” a pre-programmed scenario, or programs it manually) & the other pilot has a turn at it. You can do a single engine landing, the sim freezes, the instructor resets & now you are 20,000’ up in an “Unusual Attitude” (as seen below)…the instructor then makes sure you are ready & unfreezes the sim, so you can practice recovering the jet. (This is called “Upset Prevention & Recovery Training” or UPRT, and there is a big difference between how the jet handles at 10,000’ vs 35,000’) The LOE is more realistic & the sim doesn’t normally get frozen. We fly it like it’s a regular flight from gate to gate, w/ the instructor acting as ATC, Flight Attendants & Dispatch. At some point, a non-normal happens & we handle it. The instructor is quiet on the LOE, where in the MV they may have you repeat something multiple times to really get it down. The sims themselves are incredibly realistic. Hydraulic “legs” tilt & roll it to create sensory illusions. For example, pushing the throttles up tilts the sim back, giving you the illusion of acceleration. That’s all my space!

@redsteeze I get that this moment has to be horrible for you and you’re coping by minimizing Nick’s influence on the Right (intentionally?) but if you’re courageous you’d call this insanity out. Not possible to make jihadist accusations tho so maybe too much to expect from you

I have a major problem with people who think an online virgin twink David Duke wannabe is somehow worse than the people actually shooting Jews in the street, and that person voting for the party endorsing that.

You attended a rally last week that flew Palestinian flags and hosted tents celebrating Charlie Kirk's assassination. You purposely sugar coated and ignored that. I have defended you against these attacks going back 10 years. The influencer/pundit right has an antisemitism problem. It's undeniable. But it is in no way institutionalized like the progressive left and the Democratic party that you now vote for. In media, in Academia, everywhere. No one told you to start defending or voting for the party where antisemitism is institutionalized. No one forced you to attend marches waving Palestinian Flags. And no one forced you to attack people on the right who offered prayers and defended you. You could have said no. But you didn't. You're just another progressive NY Times Op-Ed writer now, and you've earned every bit of that title. Enjoy it.
David French@DavidAFrench

Ten years ago, many of us started warning about the rise of the alt-right, and we were told to shut up and focus on the left. Well now anti-Semitism, racism, and conspiracies are exploding all over the right (especially with young Republicans), with some of the biggest voices in America amplifying the most grotesque bigotry. There are no dog whistles any longer, only bullhorns. Some folks on the right are finally waking up and realizing that their obsessions with the woke left blinded them to the monsters in their midst. I hope it's not too late.

@AidenBuzzetti What's a good explanation for that tat then? Is he especially fond of German tankers who fought w/ ISAF in Afghanistan? When the average person thinks of "panzer," do they not associate that w/Nazis & Blitzkrieg?

Yeah, it’s German for “Tank.” Stupid “gotcha” questions like this don’t deserve a response. Joe is a patriot and has done more to protect this country than any of the people who’ve tried to slander him.

NEW: Here's a photo posted in 2018 apparently of Joe Kent, Trump's pick to head the National Counterterrorism Center, from the Instagram feed of a family member, showing he had the word "PANZER" tattooed on his arm. Why? I asked him, the NCTC, and the ODNI, and, so far, no reply.

At least 3 of the 5 Venezuelan plaintiffs allege that they are not members of the TdA gang. So even if Trump’s Alien Enemies Act proclamation is generally lawful (something that I am not convinced of), why shouldn’t these 3 be able to contest their deportation in federal court? Would you say that an American citizen who was mistakenly being deported couldn’t sue to stop his deportation?

1. I’d be open to impeaching judges for persistent bad-faith or wild rulings. Nothing remotely like that here. Indeed, from what I have seen, Judge Boasberg’s critics have yet to make a clear and compelling case that his order was wrong. 2. Impeachment threats are at best performative nonsense. Even worse, they may provoke threats of violence against judges and family members.

@amiguello1 Have France / UK not been in combat in 40 years? If they have, then I think the most reasonable take is that he was doing an exaggerated scoff at European power in general.

Okay, I’m staying out of this conversation from now on. It has the same leftist dynamics I abhor—hysterics and lectures while asking us to “do more/better”. You have no leverage, so you choose social opprobrium to get your way. I don’t respond to that. Good luck to you.

Nothing all that offensive about what Vance said here. Really interesting to see Europeans hyping themselves up like this. To what end, I wonder.
