This is the problem with getting your historical information solely off of Twitter and Instagram, mind you, an Instagram that is so notoriously known for sharing false and fake historical accounts, there is a certain aura of embarrassment surrounding people who feel the need to create and birth pieces of history to feel superior about their nationality. There is no shame in not being the strongest or oldest historically, what’s important is the presence. Now, I’ve dedicated years of my life to researching the region’s history under some of the best historians in Europe in a 650-year-old Viennese institution that has a library with knowledge you cannot even imagine. I’ve translated ancient Greek and Latin scrolls and tablets with only a dictionary and my bare fingers regarding my country’s history; my busy-being doesn’t mean I was unable to respond to your claims. If your gloved-hand hasn’t touched a 300-year-old recounting your country’s history, please do not claim to be a historian. You don’t get the label by spending time on Wikipedia, Instagram, and Twitter. Let’s recount Qatar’s history from the very beginning: Qatar has been a verifiable, separate political entity since ancient times and long before the existence of any Sheikhdom in the region. The first verified existence of Qatar that I will acknowledge is that of Pliny the Elder in circa 49-52 AD, there have been some that point back to the 3rd century BC, though Historians do not recognize those specific examples. See, Pliny the Elder mentioned a people in the region that referred to themselves as “Catharrei” and “Catharreis,” who engaged in trade with the Romans. Catharrei, from the Arabic قطري transliterated into Latin at the time. Around a century later, notable Greek geographer Ptolemy noted coordinates for a place called “Katara” inhabited by nomadic tribes who referred to themselves as “Katarei,” in the exact same location as modern-day Qatar. Differences in spellings, again, come from transliteration, in this case: Arabic>Ancient Greek>English. My gorgeous homeland, Qatar, then stuns in its, until now, first recorded appearance in a European map named Tabula Asiae VI, printed in Rome in 1478 AD and based on the aforementioned Ptolemy’s Geographia. Other countries/cities in the region’s absence from these records is simply due to their lack of existence as separate or modernly identifiable entities at the time. Qatar then reappeared in many historical accounts over its 2000+ year old history including but not limited to: Islamic narrations, trade archives, Portuguese sailing accounts, weapons and defense manufacturing as well as transportation during the Caliphate eras, and even clothing manufacturing. Can’t forget pearl diving and fishing. However, I’m focusing on what I call the modern history of about the past 350 years or so, as it is most relevant to your claims. The thing about history is that, unfortunately, you can’t take a single, unverified (and random?) source to uphold your claims. Unfortunately for you, claims have to be verifiable throughout multiple sources, and what’s even more unfortunate is that you’ve used (even the unverifiable claims) sources that directly contradict your statements. It’s almost as if you haven’t read them and just shared, or you (or the original authors) have desperately tried to take them out of context. Very amusing. In modern history, Qatar was always a tribally-governed region. As even your sources claim, they had no king, emir, or sheikh that ruled over all tribes. Each tribe had their own ruler and they accordingly had diplomatic agreements with tribes both in and outside Qatar. I have to be honest, I haven’t read most of the BS you’ve tweeted, because quite frankly, I don’t care what a person with no idea of history has to say about any historic events, however I am directly addressing the claims of your “sources,” if these sources even exist.
