Tug to the target with the hips, slight vertical drop with the arms, hand, and club, while the lead hip and knee moves back to the target line. Fire the hips by sending the lead hip away from the target line. Leave the head behind the ball and look under the shot. Not easy to execute. Practice in slow motion in front of mirrors.

Probably the most important thing is creating the lateral move towards the target during the backswing and leaving your head behind the ball through impact. Trailing side is clear to bring the arms, hands and club to the ball from the inside. Key is to leave your head behind the ball on the way down. I met a guy who caddied for her once. Not a great camera angle for down the line analysis, but she does appear to be laid off going back, starts out of the top with a lot of head movement ( Annika Sörenstam ), and does appear to come down a little over her backswing plain but still under Hogan’s plain of glass. She, like other amazing junior golfers fires the hips extremely well ( young Tiger Woods ). Very impressive.

Pointless without first learning how to properly clear the trailing side during to backswing and transition out of the top. A proper golf swing that leads to good ball striking is a comprehensive athletic process. No one thing will ever make you a good ball striking. It requires a sequentially compounding process of fundamentals that few are willing to learn, practice, or master.

Perhaps he needs to decide what is of importance. Ball striking in my opinion gives amateur golfers the most satisfaction per round. Sinking a 40 ft putt at the last brings you back to the course, but suffering shanks all day is draining. Scoring, ball striking, or the complete game? The later requires a significant investment of time. Time is a rare commodity at his age. The concession would be to practice at home in front of mirrors or cameras. I prefer mirrors. The short game is very personal and requires commitment. Connecting every shot together hole by hole is pure joy. It may be more of an investment in time than he is willing to make. Nonetheless, he has talent.

My son has to have the best golf swing for a 20 hcp you will ever see. 115 mph swing speed, 290 carry. But he never played enough to get good and now plays just a few times a year. I tell him if he commits to golf for a season he will be killing me no problem.
