Pedophilic comments like this have become so normalized that many people don’t even recognize how disturbing they are anymore. How is no one reacting to this? The teachers are standing there smiling as if nothing inappropriate was said.

He called a child his wife. What kind of message does that communicate to her and the other children listening? It can make children think that adults making marriage-related comments toward them is normal or even flattering. That can potentially put them at greater risk of not recognizing inappropriate behavior or understanding when an adult has crossed a boundary and that they’re in danger. Pedophiles often groom their victims before committing an offense.

@Bobthebuil19383 We agree on standards. Yes, MPs should hold higher standard. But a throwaway doesn’t equate misconduct. Let judge the intent and what followed. There was no advance or action.

1. I don't think this is being blown out of proportion. This was said by a Member of Parliament, a public official who is expected to maintain professional boundaries with children and serve as an example of appropriate conduct. 2. Claiming that people have said things like this to children for years doesn't make it appropriate. The fact that something has been normalized or treated as a joke does not automatically make it acceptable 3. Criticizing an inappropriate remark does not prevent people from taking real cases of child abuse and exploitation seriously. It is not an either-or situation. We can condemn inappropriate comments while also demanding accountability for actual abuse.

These are our lawmakers though. Nobody batted an eye. Nothing of serious consequence will happen to him. In this country it is not the children who are protected, it is the political class.

The clip is being taken out of context. The comment made to the young girl was not sexual, not a proposition, and no intent behind it. It was offhand remark. No further interaction occurred. Conflating casual speech with predatory behavior does a disservice to actual victims.
