Lauren Suhr was so deeply moved by the case of a missing pregnant woman that she decided to take matters into her own hands by dating the woman's alleged mu*derer in an attempt to gather information about the case. Kelsie Schelling was 21 and eight weeks pregnant when she vanished on February 4, 2013, after driving from Denver to Pueblo, Colorado, to meet her boyfriend Donthe Lucas at a Walmart. She was never seen again. Three years later, Lauren Suhr, a young single mother who had never met Schelling or her family was so moved by the case that she decided to get answers herself. "As a mom, I couldn't even begin to fathom knowing that your child's out there or not out there," she later said. Suhr messaged Lucas on social media claiming to be new to the area, slowly built a friendship, then started asking him about Schelling. "One minute he had no involvement... and then he would just shut down and start crying hysterically," she said. Then something she hadn't planned for happened. The undercover relationship became real to him. "I felt like he did genuinely develop feelings for me and did genuinely fall in love with me," Suhr said. “He has this way about him that makes you feel so sorry for him... In the back of my mind, I always kept that he is potentially a m*rderer." She testified in court that she let the relationship turn romantic, accepted a marriage proposal and wore the ring, while staying focused on her purpose the entire time. “I knew what I was doing," she told the court. Eventually, Lucas admitted to her that he was the man caught on Walmart surveillance footage moving Kelsie's car, directly contradicting what he'd told police. She handed everything over to investigators. In 2021, Donthe Lucas was convicted of first-degree m*rder and sentenced to life without parole. Kelsie's remains have never been found. Her mother still has nowhere to bring her flowers.
