@LawDogStrikes Superheroes for me. I find the whole genre a bit ridiculous, but at the same time I can believe in massive lizard like creatures with wings flying around and breathing fire.

@julianHjessop Why do they adjust them at all? Surely once you start playing with the numbers they cease to be accurate.

UK retail sales volumes rose 0.6% in July, slightly more than expected, but still down 0.6% on the 3m/3m comparison. Essentially flat. We have at least found out why the figures were delayed: spreadsheet errors in making the seasonal adjustments... 🙄 The corrections smooth the recent numbers and shave about 0.8% off the average level of retail sales in the first half of the year. However, this is not enough to have a significant impact on the GDP data. (To be precise, the contribution of retail to GDP growth in Q1 has been halved from 0.06 percentage points to 0.03pp, but total GDP growth is unchanged to one decimal place at 0.7%. I regularly buy a dozen bottles of Badger Ale and 2 packs of mushrooms at my local supermarket. I put them on the conveyor belt in that order hoping the cashier will burst into song as they put them through the till, but they never do.
