The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) was supposed to be restitution's crowning achievement, a David Adjaye masterpiece housing the returning Benin Bronzes. Instead, as of late 2025, it sits legally stranded: land title revoked, launch overrun by protesters, legitimacy shattered. This is the implosion of a Western-imposed model that tried to solve a colonial crime with a neocolonial solution. The 2018 Benin Dialogue Group agreed to support the Oba of Benin in building a Royal Museum on Palace grounds. But Governor Obaseki, chasing international financing, pivoted. He created MOWAA an independent trust designed for "professional," non-royal control. Exactly what Western donors wanted. The British Museum and German Foreign Office poured millions into this corporate-style NGO rather than work with the traditional monarchy. Restitution became political patronage, not cultural restoration. Oba Ewuare II refused to be sidelined. The artifacts aren't "art objects" they're spiritual ancestors belonging to the throne. In March 2023, President Buhari's Federal Gazette recognized the Oba as sole owner, legally stripping MOWAA of its claim. To build this "world-class" museum, Obaseki demolished the historic Benin Central Hospital. The optics: destroy a healthcare facility for the poor to build an art house for the global elite. In November 2025, protesters stormed MOWAA's Institute launch, forcing diplomats to flee. Days later, the new Governor revoked MOWAA's land title. The "museum of the future" is now a squatter. The epilogue: You cannot bypass the original owners and call it restitution. Without transferring power not just objects even the most expensive institution is built on sand. @mukholitrevor reports.
