310 passengers on board @indigo flight went on a 13 hr and 40 min trip on Monday from Delhi to Delhi : An IndiGo flight with 310 passengers on way to Manchester from New Delhi on Monday morning was forced to make a U-turn midair as it was approaching the Eritrea airspace in Africa after it travelled for seven hours and returned to Delhi. Air space restrictions forced it to do so. This is the first IndiGo flight operating towards Manchester since February 28 following the US-Israel joint strikes on Iran. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft, 6E 033, which took off from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport at 12.42 am on Monday, returned by 2.22 pm, said an airport source. Passengers thus ended up being airborne for 13 hours and 40 minutes literally travelling from Delhi to Delhi. With  airspace restrictions across multiple countries in West Asia, the flight planned on a longish route from Delhi to over the Arabian Sea, Ethiopia, Eritrea, the Red Sea and Egypt before  entering Europe. Confirming the development,  IndiGo said in a statement, “Due to the evolving situation in and around the Middle East, some of our flights may take longer routes or experience diversions. Our flight 6E 033 operating from Delhi to Manchester had to return to its origin due to last-minute airspace restrictions, owing to the ongoing situation in West Asia.”   IndiGo had late last week announced the commencement of its operations to Europe .  It had leased its Boeing 787 aircraft from the Norwegian airline, Norse Atlantic Airways.  The airline has been operating to Athens with a different aircraft (A321) and from Bombay to Amsterdam using Norse aircraft without any issues so far. With the airspace in many countries in West Asia closed presently and Pakistan banning any aircraft from India from using  its airspace for the eleventh consecutive month  now post  the Pahalgam attacks,  IndiGo and other airlines are forced to take a detour via Africa to reach Europe. An airline source said that Norse Atlantic was not using Middle East airspace in the aftermath of an advisory from the European regulator, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), asking all carriers registered with it to not use the region’s airspace. IndiGo added that the passengers have been given an option of taking a full refund of the fare or booking their tickets on an alternative aircraft. Asked about the possibility of the Manchester flight  being operated from Delhi on Tuesday, a source said, “It depends on the situation tomorrow.
