The Torah tells us Abraham was called by God. Isaac was chosen before his birth. But Jacob only realized his destiny after he struggled with the Divine Presence all night long and prevailed. It was only then that God changed his name to ISRAEL. Similarly, Jacob - the diaspora Jew - struggled with faith and destiny for 2000 years.
