Congratulations to our entire head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team on establishing our Transoral Robotic Surgery Service in UHL @Leic_hospital with excellent patient outcomes in our first year 🙌🥳. It has been my privilege to lead our transoral robotic service at UHL and treat patients with throat cancers. We had a poster presentation of our first year robotic surgery outcomes at the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists (BAHNO) in London 🙌👏👌. Thank you to our Chief Executive Richard Mitchell and UHL leadership for their support and the Samworth Foundation for the funds to purchase the daVinci Xi robot. We have had some excellent outcomes for our cancer patients. For diagnosis, we have found the cancer primary 86% of the time using the robot (tonsillectomy and tongue base mucosectomy). For treatment, patients who had robotic oropharyngectomy and neck dissection have avoided chemoradiation 75% of the time. This is remarkable as it means these patients avoided the toxicity of chemoradiation (given over 6 weeks) like difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, tiredness and did not require feeding tubes or dental extractions. All 25 patients are alive and cancer free except in one case of recurrence in the neck. There were no primary bleeds and only 2 patients had secondary bleeds managed conservatively on the ward. There has been no return to theatre and no need for gastrostomy feeding tubes. Pain generally settled after two weeks and swallowing returned to near normal at three weeks. These are excellent results in our first year providing head and neck robotic surgery in Leicester 🙌👌👏👏 I just want to say a big thank you to every member of our head and neck MDT including Mr Conboy, Mr Mair, Mr Ekrim, Mr Tanweer, Mr Uddin, Mr Ashokkumar & all our surgeons; Prof Vaidhyananth @RamVaidhyanath, Dr Harieaswar, Dr Lam, Dr Niyaz, Dr Menon, Amy Barnes and all our radiology team; Pathologists, Oncologists led by Dr Sri Thiagarajan, Anaesthetists Dr Prea Ramasamy, Dr Hughes; Theatre teams led by Amy, Lisa, Megan, Joy and Co; Allied Health - Speech therapists Clair Sussenbach; Dietitians Catherine Hanlon, McGuinness; ACP Tracy Robinson and Macmillan nurses Laura Shields, Natalie Bull and support Aisha. Kinmonth and Ward 9 nurses led by Matrons Charlie and Petrova; Tracheostomy nurse Amy Croson, Cancer pathway coordinators, ENT Clinic staff, Admins and ENT Secretaries ❤️ We did this together as a team ❤️

The first UHL Health Equality Summit was insightful and a call to collective action. We must work together to ensure equitable access to services and improving outcomes for all our communities 🙏 It was a honour to share our work raising awareness of head and neck cancers among Asian and Black communities - Dr Postavaru, Dr N. Patel, Ms A. Jakubowska and Mrs T. Kahn @OracleHNCUK 👏👏 A unique outcome is our resolve to collaborate across institutions and establish a cohesive network focused on reducing inequalities amongst the African and Caribbean communities - Prof Ivan Browne, Dr Olubukola Ayodele, Amanda Touissant (African Heritage Alliance) and Dr Darko @darko_nat 👏👏👏❤️ Our Chief Executive @Leic_hospital Richard Mitchell @RMitchell_NHS and the Exec team have demonstrated responsive leadership by engaging genuinely with LLR communities and partnerships to reduce health inequalities 👌 Thank you to our UHL Director of Equality - Dr Ruw Abeyratne @DrRuw for her vision and proactive efforts and our Communications & Engagement Chief @ms215 for bringing this all together and articulating the vision for a more equitable society. My deepest appreciation to all our community partners working with us on raising cancer awareness - South Asian Health Action led by Kirit Mistry, the Black community in Highfields Rangers led by Morris & Lorna Hylton and the African Heritage Alliance (Amanda) with whom we are planning a cancer awareness event in October 🙏

Global oncology has always been a passion of mine. LMICs have the highest cancer mortality. Capacity building, advocacy and bridging the gap between local authorities and those of us in the diaspora for a better outcome for cancer patients is my priority. #CancerCareEfficiency

It was a great opportunity to network and collaborate. We had Dr Nadeem Hasan who was representing the British High Commission in Nigeria and @etti_fa one of the founding fathers of oncology in Nigeria. The feedback is that this should be a yearly workshop. #CancerResearch

Pharma companies need to find ways to involve more patients with African descent in clinical trials to better understand pharmacokinetics of therapeutics and biology of cancers in this population. E.g, in Nigeria, the rate of MMR deficiency in colorectal cancer is as high 43%
