Data from our briefing paper produced by @darko_nat helped inform last week's business of the House debate. Many thanks to @ShivaniRaja_LE for raising the alarming disparities in maternal health outcomes for ethnic minorities in the UK.

Maternal and neonatal deaths 'rising for the first time in a decade' - the latest Patient Safety Watch report confirms. Black mothers are still 3x more likely to die during pregnancy or shortly after than white women.
Behind this data are real women, lives and families. Just yesterday, I spoke with someone still struggling with the aftermath of losing their baby due to negligence and lack of safety. Fear shouldn't be part of any mother's journey, yet Black women consistently express the most concern about maternity safety.
This isn't just about numbers or reports. This is an obvious human rights issue.

Today I received the African Global Healthcare Icon of the Year Award 2024 organised by the African Custodian Awards 🥳🙌👏👏❤️. The ceremony was held in the city I grew up in - Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬
I dedicate this award to my Mum - Mrs Durojaiye Olaleye (who was present to witness it), my wife - Dr Mrs Jaiye Olaleye, daughters (Ruby & Lily), family, friends, patients and our head and neck cancer teams in Leicester UK @Leic_hospital 👏👏
I will continue to support medical education and capacity building for improving healthcare in Africa by God’s grace 🙏
We can all reach for the stars and achieve our dreams in whatever field of endeavour we are in. I hope this inspires someone to increase their belief in themselves, continue in diligence and achieve great things ❤️
