Had a Jane Street interview in 2023
My onsite was a heads up poker match against Vanessa Selbst. She's wearing sunglasses, Patagonia vest over a quarter-zip.
100k/200k big blind. My entire life savings is on the line, while she's playing with profits made from manipulating Indian markets.
My hole cards are QJ of hearts. I raise to 3bb.
She raises to 8bb. She's just trying to bully on the first hand. I call.
Board comes 5, Q, 7, two clubs. Top pair, but I play in flow. Check to the 3 better.
Vanessa puts in 12bb. 3/4 pot, way too big for a cbet. Suspicious, I call.
Turn comes Jack of spades. I drill two pair on the turn, spectacular feeling.
She barrels for 15bb. Small turn sizing. Surely, I have her beat. I raise to 35 bb.
Without hesitation, she snap jams. ALL IN.
I tank for 10 minutes. My mind is racing. What is she repping?
I beat her over pairs, her AK straight draws, her flush draws. I'm ahead of it all.
She senses my heart pounding and smells my fear.
"How confident are you that I'm bluffing?" Vanessa said.
"0.95", I blurted out, not fully knowing her range.
"Are you sure?" After thinking harder for a few more seconds, I realized she's trying to intimidate me.
I flick in a chip. "I call."
The river comes 7 of diamonds. The board is 5 Q 7 J 7.
I flip over my two pair, thinking I'm good.
Vanessa turns over 2 7 offsuit. She hit trips on the river to beat my two pair.
"0.95, huh?" she chuckles. That's when I knew I failed.

Jane Street made ~$40B in 2025 with 3,500 employees, a ~2x from the year before. At ~65-70% profit margin, that's $8M profit / employee, the highest for a 1000+ ppl company. High-frequency trading continues to be the most efficient money making engine. I want to share an old story about my Jane Street interview in 2014. Jane Street was known for hiring a lot of math, physics and CS olympiad winners from top universities and putting them through many rounds - including, for trading roles, a gauntlet of mental math. It was my 6th interview and my final round and I recall being asked "What is the next day after today in DD/MM/YYYY where all the digits are unique?" They'd toy with you and say "You can use a pencil and paper, if you want" but you knew that was an instant no. Painstakingly and as quickly as I could, I came to an answer. "How confident are you that this is correct on a 0-1 probability scale?" the interviewer said. "0.95", I blurted out, not fully knowing how to answer that. "Are you sure?" After thinking harder for a few more seconds, I realized I could've flipped the digits around to get a closer date. I gave the interviewer my answer. It was correct. "0.95 huh?" he chuckled. That's when I knew I failed. Note: fwiw, other companies that come close in efficiency are - Tether ($90M+ profit/emp) - Hyperliquid ($80M+ profit/emp) and on revenue: - Valve ($50M/emp) - OnlyFans ($37M/emp) - Craigslist ($14M/emp) - Anthropic ($12M/emp, run rate) - OpenAI ($8M/emp, run rate) For comparison, Nvidia is very efficient at scale and is $4.4M/emp.

Florida was never finished.
Most people look at a coastline and see a boundary. I see an interface, a place where engineering, economics, and ambition meet physical reality.
The real opportunity goes beyond adding land.
It comes from creating more coastline.
More frontage.
More views.
More marinas.
More ports.
More neighborhoods.
More parks.
More protected water.
More room for civilization to compound.
The highest-leverage version follows the existing geometry of the shore. Layered, coastline-parallel growth. Thin barrier belts. Nested coastal districts. Bay-edge extensions. Archipelagic expansion around the places where people already want to live, build, and trade.
That is how you scale a peninsula while preserving the qualities that made it valuable in the first place.
People have a strange instinct to treat geography as sacred, as if the map arrived in its optimal form. It did not. Geography is a starting condition.
Every serious civilization eventually edits its terrain.
It dredges harbors.
Straightens channels.
Raises ports.
Builds islands.
Claims wetlands.
Cuts canals.
Moves water.
Extends the edge between land and sea until nature becomes infrastructure.
The future belongs to societies that understand this clearly:
the world is something to shape.
Carefully.
Deliberately.
Intentionally.
A mature civilization does more than occupy territory.
It upgrades it.
That is the deeper idea here.
Territorial engineering as a force multiplier for beauty, density, logistics, wealth, and long-run optionality.
The shoreline is not where development has to stop.
It is where the next layer can begin.

A study analyzing IQ, health and longevity of people born to young parents (say both in their early 20s) vs people born to ‘professionals’ who wait until their late 30s or 40s. This might be revealing. You might find the kids born to younger people are better across the board.
