@boreta The first song never hits cause you’re full of adrenaline and can’t properly assess the sound quality due to overexcitement. The song you play the next day when your nervous system is back to normal is more important. Happens to me all the time when I get new gear.

Open-endedness reconciles the high goals of machine learning with the goals of high art, establishing the freedom for machines and humans to freely explore what interests them in the hope of discovering something new.
We conceived this project as a game to try and give agents the freedom to go on a novelty hunt for new images, and I liked the idea of calling it "Kinder Scout" in reference to the Mass Trespass in the mountains of England - a protest that attempted to establish the right for anyone to roam the land freely.
I hadn't told our collaborators @teropa and @samueldiggins my naming idea yet when they explained to me they had planned a retreat for a few days near the deadline they couldn't reschedule. When I asked where, they said "Kinder Scout". Just wow.
In the spirit of unplanned signs (what I call angel moments) we rode the serendipity and asked them to wear cameras for their hike, with the simple prompt to only follow what they thought was interesting in the moment.
These images are sent to an ensemble of agents who mutate and narrativize to try and improve on their most novel images. Humans and inhumans on the same mission to discover something together.

Inspired by Ken Stanley’s Novelty Search and a right-to-roam mindset, *Kinder Scout* sends a group of AI “expedition” agents into the hidden space of a diffusion model to look for images that feel truly unfamiliar. Some agents share the artists’ taste, others act more like critics, filtering out what looks too familiar. On a digital canvas, you see them move, argue, and discover together in real time.

About 18 months ago I started making rave tunes after my therapist said it might help with the burnout I had from startup life (teklife cures tech life tbh).
I made a couple of tracks and had my roomate (now girlfriend) sing on them and it's been a crazy year of playing festivals and sleeping on airport floors.
Anyway our Boiler Room is out and it's a nice reminder that doing what you love is often a better idea than doing what you think people will love.
I wanted to make 160 bpm hard trance songy songs with verses and bridges and we wrote them in spanish thinking about 10 ppl would care but they've brought us all over the world to play music and that's all we could ever ask for really.

i think the increasingly pervasive idea that effort is what legitimizes art breaks down when you consider that the best conceptual artists often actively aim to obfuscate how much effort goes into producing theirs
