There is nothing surprising in this decision as it is based on solid constitutional grounds regarding the independence of the Ombudsman from the Executive branch. The SC decision is a vindication of former Overall Deputy Ombudsman Carandang and a condemnation of Duterte’s attempt to protect himself and his family from criminal investigation and abuse of his powers as President. This vindication is also reinforced by the AMLC Report disclosed at the impeachment hearings of VP Sara which finally revealed the billions in funds that went through the Duterte accounts, transactions that Carandang was investigating when he was removed from office by Duterte. Thus, this SC decision is also a testament to Carandang’s heroic actions to hold the highest officials of the government accountable at the cost of his own personal security and professional career. Isa-isa nang sumisingaw at nalalantad ang mga pang-aabuso at pinagtakpan na mga kabulastugan at katiwalian ng administrasyong Duterte. Patunay lang ito na hindi panghabambuhay ang poder at ang paghahari-harian, at na laging mananaig ang katotohanan. Sa patuloy na paninindigan sa kabila ng paninira, pananakot at panggigipit, makakamit ang hustisya hindi lang para sa sarili, kundi para sa sambayanan.

The Supreme Court has nullified the order of former president Rodrigo Duterte in January 2018, dismissing former Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang. Carandang was dismissed from his post after he revealed alleged Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) records related to Duterte's alleged unexplained wealth. In a unanimous ruling by the Third Division of the Supreme Court, the Court asserted that the president has no administrative or disciplinary authority over a Deputy Ombudsman.
