Since 1980, Zimbabwe's gold was exported by Fidelity Refineries, a division of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. In the value chain, gold buyers purchased gold from miners on behalf of the Reserve Bank and then sold it onto Fidelity for a commission. This closed society of gold buyers was predominantly white, led by Ewan MacMillan and his father, for whom Scott Sakupwanya worked in the early 2000s.
By 2008, all Zimbabwean parastatals, including MMCZ (Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe) and Fidelity Refineries, were placed under U.S. executive sanctions, restricting their ability to sell resources on the global market and receive U.S. dollar payments and clearances. That year, gold buyers like MacMillan delivered only four tons of gold to Fidelity Printers, resulting in Zimbabwe losing its LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) certification, as countries are required to supply 10 tons to maintain certification.
With the government suspecting that white gold buyers were smuggling gold due to Fidelity's blocked access to U.S. dollar payments under sanctions, Scott Sakupwanya approached Gono, proposing that he could ensure Zimbabwe obtained over 10 tons of gold to regain LBMA status. Gono granted Scott the first gold buyer's license given to a black buyer after Roger Boka, the first black man to hold a gold trading license, had passed on.
The following year, Zimbabwe surpassed 10 tons of gold per year, and by 2019, Scott had become Zimbabwe's biggest gold dealer and trader, delivering over 17 tons of gold to Fidelity annually. This led to a 4000% increase in Zimbabwe's gold production since 2009, surpassing the all-time gold production record with a record-breaking 36 tons in 2023 and over 37 tons in 2025.
Notably, during this period, Kuvimba, an entity then owned by the government and Kuda Tagwirei (now owned by the Mutapa Investment Fund), also became the biggest formal gold producer, contributing to record gold deliveries to the Reserve Bank.
Today, Scott and Kuda Tagwirei face criticism from Western media and even individuals like Blessed Geza, due to their disruption of the dominance of legacy white families like the MacMillans in Africa's gold industry.
Some suspect that critics like Geza are sponsored by Western gold and commodity traders who want to vilify Scott and other black Zimbabwean businesspeople to get them sanctioned -as happened to Tagwirei- so that British companies can reassume control over the economy.

Zimbabwe is a nation that has produced amazing talent, innovators, and leaders.
I was thrilled to watch the panel discussion on leading in the age of AI at the ongoing Global AI Summit for Africa in Rwanda.
The panel discussion had our very own Dr Strive Masiyiwa, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for the 2024 Ministry of ICTPCS Excellence Awards as a panellist. Dr Masiyiwa highlighted that AI is about augmenting and amplifying human capability. His companies are setting up Africa's first GPUs which will serve the entire continent.
We are grateful that Dr Masiyiwa's African business continues to have a huge presence in Zimbabwe with over 26 000 of Liquid's 120 000km of fibre in Africa deployed in Zimbabwe and 2 out of 10 of their African data centres located in Zimbabwe.
I am equally proud to see several Zimbabweans appearing as panellists in other sessions. Another Zimbabwean Dr James Manyika is co-chairing the entire summit with Dr Masiyiwa and three others.
Zimbabwean panellists at the Global AI Summit for Africa include Chido Munyati, Head of Africa at the World Economic Forum, Hardy Pemhiwa, President and CEO of Cassava Technologies and Natalie Jabangwe, CEO of Timbuktoo Foundation.
Government remains committed to creating an environment that allows Zimbabweans to thrive in the digital arena. We are also extremely proud of Zimbabweans shining in the global arena in the ICT sector, like Dr Masiyiwa and Dr James Manyika to mention but a few. Policies for more incentives will be availed for our techpreneurs.
I strongly believe that Zimbabwe needs to adopt the Uzbekistan model for ICT companies,we will continue having conversations with the Ministry of finance .

There’s nothing unusual or unethical about a company diversifying its services under the same name. Many successful businesses expand into new sectors to leverage their expertise, resources, and market presence. Wicknell Chivayo’s company venturing into road construction demonstrates adaptability and growth a common practice in the corporate world.
IMC Communications remains fully operational and continues to play a pivotal role in bridging Zimbabwe’s digital divide through partnerships like ‘Starlink’ensuring affordable and reliable internet access nationwide. Diversification doesn’t mean abandonment; it means strategic expansion to create more opportunities and value.
Moreover, companies worldwide from Samsung to Virgin Group—operate across multiple industries under one brand. If a business has the capacity, compliance, and competence to deliver quality services in different sectors, why limit its potential? The focus should be on transparency, execution, and results not baseless accusations.
Let’s support innovation and economic growth instead of spreading unfounded skepticism. @wicknellchivayo

CELEBRATING NATIONAL YOUTH DAY...Today I wish to join His Excellency, President E. D. MNANGAGWA and the rest of the Nation in celebrating the life and legacy of the Late founding President ROBERT GABRIEL MUGABE, and his immense contributions to the INDEPENDENCE, education and YOUTH EMPOWERMENT in Zimbabwe. This day is a reminder of the CRUCIAL ROLE that young people play in NATION-BUILDING, as the youth remain at the heart of Vision 2030 and the Second Republic’s people-centred policies. This National Youth Day is not just about reflecting on the contributions of PAST generations but mostly about recognizing and SUPPORTING young people who are working hard to uplift themselves and their communities. As young leaders, we must SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES, work together and continue contributing to the socio-economic transformation of our country. The youth of Zimbabwe are not waiting for the future—we ARE THE FUTURE !!!
In the spirit of EMPOWERMENT, I have been deeply moved by the online PLEA from Mrs. Eunice Dembo, the widow of the legendary Zimbabwean music icon, LEONARD DEMBO, for financial support. Despite the distinguished musical genius that DEMBO was, selling more than 100,000 copies of his album and music played at the Miss World Pageant in 1994, It breaks my heart that his family has NOT benefited from his LEGACY and his wife now lives in destitution. Dembo is actually one of my best yesteryear musician and some of my personal favourites include Chitekete, Shamwari Yangu Warova, Venenziya and Ruva Rashe, which are themselves ANTHEMS at weddings and various events in Zimbabwe and across the GLOBE.
This National Youth Day reminds us of the need to EMPOWER and support one another, and on that account, I say a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Dembo. Please go to EXQUISITE CAR SALE tomorrow, Saturday 22 February 2025, and collect a BRAND SPANKING NEW 2024 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 Automatic that has been FULLY paid for. In addition, please collect US$50,000 in CASH to start a BUSINESS of your choice that will provide financial stability for your family. For your SAFETY and peace of mind, a HEAVILY ARMED and adequately prepared security team will be assigned to escort you, whether to the Bank to deposit the money or to make any purchases to establish your BUSINESS. Your security is of UTMOST importance and will not be compromised. It is our duty as the youth, to PRESERVE LEGACIES and uplift those in need.
National Youth Day is about SECURING THE FUTURE for all YOUNG Zimbabweans and no young person who carries the legacy of our HEROES should be left behind. It is in this spirit that I also want to recognize TENDAI, MORGAN and FENISTIA DEMBO, the children of the Late MUSIC ICON, who like many Zimbabwean youth, are working hard to uphold their father’s legacy. You represent the next generation of artists, leaders and entrepreneurs, and it is only fitting that on such a day which celebrates youth empowerment you also get something. Please go to ENTERPRISE CAR SALE and see Madzibaba Chipaga and get a TOYOTA AQUA each.
As we celebrate this important day, I urge all young people to embrace the values of HARD WORK, UNITY and DISCIPLINE. Let this day remind us that the future of Zimbabwe is in our hands and by uplifting one another, we STRENGTHEN OUR NATION. May God bless Zimbabwe’s youth, and may we continue to RISE, INSPIRE and TRANSFORM our Country.

Our Presidium stands united, and as ZANUPF members, we must uphold this unity, focusing on the developmental priorities championed by our flag bearer, H.E. President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. His leadership has driven remarkable progress, with Zimbabwe’s GDP rising from USD 22 billion in 2017 to USD 35.5 billion in 2023, as reported by the World Bank. Infrastructure development, mining output, currency stabilisation, and tourism have all experienced sustained growth.
We must safeguard this legacy of diligence and progress. President Mnangagwa’s continued success, fueled by our collective efforts, benefits not only ZANUPF but the entire nation. Let us remain committed to hard work and delivering results, as mandated by the Zimbabwean electorate.
