Outcome (🌟), directed by Jonah Hill, is atrocious. This film is a disaster on at least three different levels, all of which I intend to dive into during this review. It’s not my style nor is it my preference to really go in on a film like I’m about to, but Hill’s second film as a director is so painfully out of touch, so disgustingly unfunny, and so incredibly unfair to Martin Scorsese, that I have no choice but throw this review down a flight of stairs. Get my guy Marty the hell away from this film & Jonah Hill’s direction as fast as humanly possible. And Keanu Reeves? If you thought you could run from this, you’re not safe either. Outcome is the story about a fictitious actor by the name of Reef Hawk (Reeves), who’s been famous since he was a kid, owns two Oscars & is recovering from a secret heroin addiction. The plot here is so mindlessly stupid I barely have the energy to give it room in this review. The idea here is Reef’s attorney Ira (Jonah Hill) informs Reef that an unknown person is extorting Reef with a viral video of Reef that will tank Reef’s career. This forces Reef, at the behest of Ira, to meet with people from Reef’s past, apologize, atone, and hope he can find the person trying to extort him in the process. His friends Kyle (Cameron Diaz) and Xander (Matt Boomer) stick with him through thick & thin yada yada yada- the story is so fucking stupid. I told you at the top of my review that this movie is a disaster on three levels & I’m going to tell you all three right now. The first is issue is the writing could not be worse. The dialogue between characters sucks, the plot itself is ridiculous, and every attempt at humor falls flat on its face. But what’s most offensive about this film is the plight Reef takes to atone for his past. It’s clearly a cosplay for Hill’s own personal life & image, which has taken a few major hits in the last 6 years. Hill is effectively communicating his own personal feelings through Reef’s journey, and all of it just feels so totally out of touch. Nothing in this script is funny and the way the characters talk amongst each other is just obnoxious. Screenplay = F. The second issue here is Jonah Hill the actor, who tries to upstage Keanu Reeves at every turn & is quite literally “doing the most”. How is this the same Jonah Hill who starred in Superbad? How is this the same Jonah Hill who had me dying when I first saw 21 Jump Street? Hill’s character is supposed to serve as the comic relief throughout the film as Reef goes on a “emotional” journey through his past. But this is some of the worst overacting I’ve seen in awhile. Hill just isn’t funny whatsoever & his performance gave me second-hand embarrassment. Also, his fake teeth & entire wardrobe are just an annoying distraction. The third issue is the filmmaking. Everything about this movie looks utterly awful. This movie takes place in Los Angeles but looks like it was shot completely in front a green screen. For the life of me, I don’t get why Jonah Hill, the director, made such an ugly looking film. But before I go, I have to speak on Keanu Reeves. I am a massive Keanu Reeves fan. Am I going to sit here and suggest I’m the biggest Reeves fan in the world? Definitely not. But I respect him as an artist. That said, what the hell is he thinking picking films like Good Fortune & Outcome, especially in such close proximity to one another? Never mind the fact Reeves is essentially trying to help two quasi-cancelled guys who belong in 2015 get back on their feet, what bothers me more is that neither film is a good use of Reeves’ talents as an actor. His line delivery is so redundant in both Good Fortune & Outcome, his performances in both films feels so similar when his characters are totally different, and I mean that in a bad way. Reeves has comedic chops- see Always Be My Maybe or Something’s Gotta Give or Bill & Ted- this guy can achieve “funny”. But not in these situations. Not with these trash scripts. Reeves needs to do a better job vetting projects & picking films. I would suggest he start by avoiding comedies for the near future & get back to John Wick or The Matrix. Skip this movie at all costs.
