Speech in which Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States, 1941. On December 11, 1941, just four days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler stood before the Reichstag and formally declared war on the United States. Germany was not obligated by its pact with Japan to do so; the Tripartite Pact required support only if a member was attacked. The U.S. had not attacked Germany first. Hitler framed the declaration as retaliation for American naval escorts and Lend-Lease aid to Britain and the Soviet Union. In reality, it was a massive strategic gamble. Within hours, the United States reciprocated, transforming a primarily European war into a truly global conflict. Many of Hitler’s own military advisers were stunned by the decision. By bringing America’s industrial power, producing nearly half of the world’s manufactured goods at the time, fully into the war, Germany ensured it would eventually face overwhelming economic and military force. #drthehistories
