Let me tell you guys a story my mom told us while we were growing up. According to her, when she was still in school, two of her classmates were so much in love and wanted to marry by all means. But the issue was that in those days, before two people got married, their parents usually did what the Igbos called “iju ase” especially the bride’s family. The girl was from Imo State while the guy was from Anambra. That was the first challenge they had. The guy’s parents insisted that he must marry someone from Anambra. They dragged and dragged it for months and later overcame it. When they thought their problems were over, that was when the guy’s family decided to make inquiries about the girl’s family only to discover that she was an Osu. If you are Igbo, you know what it meant in those days for someone to be an Osu, and the stigmatization that came with it. That was how they entered another round of battle with both parents. The boy’s mom said over her dead body would she allow her child to marry an Osu. The girl’s parents, seeing all the drama, advised her to forget about the guy because even if they managed to move past this roadblock, she still would not enjoy the marriage because her mother-in-law would always be on her neck. The guy convinced her that they could fight for their lives. And guess what they did? You guessed right, they decided to enter a blood covenant, promising themselves that no matter what happened, they would still love each other and would eventually marry. You can guess how the whole thing ended.
