@tcsturfequip Man can you come to the states ? I'm having a cut issue with a john deere 6500 fairway mower. I have everything square and paralleled but cut still looks goofy.

A great day today adjusting shear point position, blade selection and clip rate with the same HOC (and not sharp units) at Effingham GC. Will be great when they are sharpened. Even better catching up with the EM Charlie who I used to work with 22 years ago (or more)!

@MikeRollinsSIP I had this same issue with the toro dpas! I went by the book and did 3 degrees on the top face the cut wasn't very good. I also found the bedknife attitude at 6 degrees is not enough for our course cutting at .0100. I changed that to 9 degrees and the cut is money !

🚨Cutline Thread: there's a BIG difference between sharp & geometrically correct. Doesn't matter what color your mower or grinder is, either - you can control this. These bedknives were SHARP. Question is: how long will they cut? Answer: for about half a fairway & then they'll be ripping the turf. They had no top face angle: Bedknife angles are the most underrated aspect of a CU. While a 3 degree, factory-recommended top face angle will work for @CBraunEM in MN, on bentgrass, it won't work for @GeraldKaraJr1 on Paspalum, in Florida. That same @ToroGolf bedknife needs to be at 9 degrees on the top face for Jerry's turf or it's going to cut for a few holes & be dull again. The CU below was SHARP (in the top of the photo). It's from @AxtonMatthew's time in Bahrain, before he made his way to The Belfry, in England. Looks like the operator turned the reel off going one direction. Actual HOC is completely different from one pass to another. Front face angle of the bedknife was 15 degrees. Factory calls for 14. Solution? He changed the front face to 7 degrees & the problem went away. When going into the grain, that 15 degrees was fine. But going WITH the grain, it wasn't enough to stand the turf up. ALL WE CHANGED WAS THE FRONT FACE ANGLE. Pool tables, everywhere. And now 3-9 looks good. Sure, "we're just cutting grass, Mike - relax," but that's EXPENSIVE grass & it's a direct link to our ability to our job. It's so much more than "How's it cutting?" It's about "What'd it take to get it to cut? How long is that cut lasting? What's it take to MAINTAIN that cut? How much labor, material, & resources are we sinking into this cut?" We can't assume that, because it's sharp, our work is done. Bedknife angles are just 1 of MANY aspects that we can use to our advantage when making the CU do what we want it to. That's when reel diameter & shape, relief, bedknife front face thickness, bedbars, parallelism, & uniformity - to name a few - come in to play. In my personal opinion, this industry has been building top fuel dragsters for CU's: we get it sharp real fast, but it doesn't cut for as long as it's designed to. It'll do the 1/4 mile in 4.3 seconds at 340mph, but the engine has to be rebuilt, EVERY TIME. My personal opinion: I'd rather build a NASCAR engine that does 205mph for 600 miles & then does it again the next week. 2 Toro Flex 21's mowed the green below. I don't think they were aiming for a shadow cut on 18 green. These CU's were sharp, too. Just because they're sharp, doesn't mean they're correct. The problem? A thin front face knife was on the CU on the left & a thick knife was on the right. Reel diameters played a role here, too - affecting clearance. Look at the variations in the front face thicknesses: From a QoC/ACA diagnostic standpoint, we chase our tails, all the time. Get everything straight, cylindrical, squared up, and uniform and you turn into Yoda because IF something goes wrong, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Again, in my opinion, we've only been filling the CU tank up halfway & then we complain about the range. We want to fill the tank up. We do that by measuring & controlling the lines & circles in the CU. It's not rocket appliances. I'm gonna stop here, for now, because I can write another 10k words on this topic. So, I'm going to leave you with a testimonial from someone who's in the trenches, with you, @lmack_1:

@BryanEpland I only notice this on deere and aftermarket reels. The toro reels with the datums are pretty good. I pie tape before and after I grind.

Video below shows why cones are ground into reels when indexing off the reel shaft, if you aren’t careful. I often hear people confused about WHY we tape reels: For the DIAMETER of the reel. For the SHAPE. For UNIFORMITY from reel to reel, mower to mower. For paralleling. Etc.

@ChristopherFogg Not sure. I've only been here 2 years. But it's hard to set the HOC with that much runout. Some of them are only .002 - .003 but I have a cpl with .010. Not a fan of the golfcos. Is yours rollers 3inch or 2.5in diameter ?
