@CvatikPhoto “He self taught and made short films!” No, his family’s rich, bought him premium editing software as a teen which he then learned how to use via YouTube (community taught, not self), then said parents funded his travel and entry to film festivals for years

Made it out to Game Dude in North Hollywood today. When I moved to LA in 2007, this was one of the places that got me back into collecting retro games. A lot of history for me here, and for many SoCal gamers too. Hard to believe this store has been around for over 40 years.

“Why are you so mean to AI writers 😢” 1. You aren’t a writer, you’re a lazy slop generator 2. You take up real space in creative industries with stolen content 3. There is no talent, effort, or skill behind mass producing prompts for cash 4. You lack experience, effort, dedication, or craft 5. You demand the label of writer with the same audacity of ordering a pizza and calling yourself a chef

For Billy West to call anyone a sellout is rich. Anyway I disagree. Anyone can make a movie with an iPhone. But you can count good movies shot on an iPhone with one hand. Yeah, the kid down the block can make a pretty picture in AI, but making something compelling, with heart and intention is an entirely different story

Saying the quiet part out loud. After an online hate mob bullied Jorge R. Gutierrez out of using AI, voice actor Billy West chimes in and tells us the real reason: The collapse of the barrier to entry is not acceptable. Only established artists are allowed to create.

AI filmmakers are one of the MOST in-demand people in the creative industry right now. This is the dilemma right now. There are NOT enough AI filmmakers, partly because being really good at editing, cinematography, AND actual AI skills is a LOT to master. The very best AI filmmakers are very rare. There are 6 entities that are hunting for them, causing a squeeze in the job market: > Big studios - want to hire AI filmmakers for experimental and research projects > AI studios - they’re experiencing demand for their own projects and clients and need AI filmmakers to train and work on those projects > AI tool companies - want to hire AI creative directors and filmmakers to showcase their tools > AI streamers - who want to fill up their catalog with AI content > Ad Agencies - nobody cares if an ad is made with AI. Agencies are training up their own people to do AI to cost save on ads and… > Brands - are demanding quicker, cheaper, and more variety and since it’s so easy, they’re also hiring to tinker and even shorten feedback timelines While one side of the creative industry is losing jobs, demand in this industry is exploding and not abating. AI skills are very easy to learn but VERY hard to master.

This is a sequence I made a few years ago for the Unreal Fellowship, no AI involved. I can sit in my living room and animate something by hand and this is an example. At the time, I was blown away by how much easier it had gotten to handle massive details and geometry with realtime dynamic lighting and rendering. It used to take an entire studio to do this sort of thing. But AI (even though it still needs more control) lets me iterate 10x faster, test crazy ideas without wasting weeks, and actually finish projects instead of grinding forever. Tools are tools.

This is exactly why I keep saying that harassment isn’t activism. Someone will take that opportunity. The technology isn’t going away. The studios aren’t going away. The investment isn’t going away. The only thing that happened here is that a creator got pushed out of a project he was excited about. What’s even stranger is seeing people celebrate it as a victory. If your goal is supporting artists, cheering when someone is bullied into walking away from creative work which would never have been greenlit if not for the technology angle feels like a very odd definition of support. You can disagree with AI. You can criticize it. You can refuse to use it. But creators being threatened until they abandon projects doesn’t move the conversation forward for anyone. It just makes fewer people willing to participate in it publicly.

I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon. I will not be making a Punky Duck series. Actions speak louder than words. My intent was to showcase artists, both new and seasoned, both inside and outside the studios, driving this new tech. My sincerest apology to those I upset. I promise to do better moving forward. Thank you for your patience with me. I will try harder.

99% of the people harassing, cancelling, or threatening Jorge over AI have nothing at stake. Easy to virtue signal when it’s not your industry or livelihood on the line.

If you're working fully remote, you should be taking a 20% pay cut. You aren't commuting, you aren't buying lunch, and half of you are doing laundry on company time anyway. Let's be real.
