Met with 🇪🇸 Health Minister Mónica García & her team on the sidelines of the @WHO Executive Board meeting (#EB158) in Geneva. I commended Spain’s strong track record in primary health care (PHC) and its commitment to sharing it's PHC experience with others across the European Region and beyond. We explored what will further strengthen PHC across the Region, including better performance data. We also discussed our close collaboration on health workforce issues, in support of all health and care workers, and renewed our commitment to ending violence against women and girls – a priority under the Second European Programme of Work – where #Spain and Minister García are true champions.

Well done to 🇲🇪 on notable achievements, including the Bloomberg Award and steady #EU accession progress. Continued partnership with @WHO_Europe will be key to navigating remaining challenges and advancing #EPW2 priorities:immunization, survivor-centred action, mental health 🙌
Hans Kluge@hans_kluge

Pleased to welcome Ms Snežana Radović, Montenegro’s Ambassador to Denmark, at @UNCityCPH today. I congratulated 🇲🇪 on its #EU accession progress and its tobacco control achievements, including receiving a Global Bloomberg Award. We discussed: ▶️boosting #immunization coverage through stronger risk communication to counter #misinformation ▶️priorities under the new European Programme of Work (#EPW2), including survivor-centred action on violence against women & girls and stronger support for mental health. @WHO_Europe stands ready to support #Montenegro on these priorities.

Applying health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks are among the best tools to mobilize domestic resources for health and transition from aid dependency to sustainable self-reliance. For example, in the Philippines, tax reform on tobacco and alcohol in 2013 increased revenues by 5X which supported the expansion of national health insurance to more than 15mn families. As of July 2024, at least 183 countries applied an excise tax on tobacco, 167 countries applied one on alcohol, and 116 countries applied one on sugary drinks. @WHO has launched two reports that give a global assessment of taxes on alcohol and sugary drinks. We look forward to supporting more countries to design and implement health taxes to protect health. who.int/news/item/13-0…

Speaking at the 11th Turkish Medical World Congress in Ankara 🇹🇷, I outlined key priorities of the new European Programme of Work (#EPW2) and how our Region can draw on Türkiye’s experience in: ▶️ emergency preparedness, including for earthquakes ▶️ strong family-medicine-based primary care ▶️ healthy ageing and community-based support ▶️ digital innovation in care ▶️ climate–health initiatives The latter will be one of the key areas of our partnership as Türkiye will host #COP31 next year. I also highlighted my special initiative to strengthen the health-system response to violence against women and girls under EPW2 — a public-health emergency that demands coordinated action. Both #EPW2 and the Healthy Türkiye Century – the country’s national health vision & reform agenda – aim to turn shared challenges into opportunities and make health a driver of economic, scientific and social progress. I look forward to working with Health Minister @drmemisoglu, @saglikbakanligi and @tusebgovtr to turn this shared vision into better #HealthForAll.

Adopted! With the approval of Member States, the second European Programme of Work - #EPW2 – is now official. Developed through a year-long process of co-creation with countries and partners, EPW2 is both a vision and a roadmap - designed to keep @WHO_Europe focused, accountable, and ready for the future. It sets out 5️⃣ priorities: 🔹strengthening health security 🔹preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases 🔹supporting healthy ageing 🔹tackling the climate–health crisis 🔹shaping the health systems of the future And 2️⃣ special initiatives that cut across all priorities: 🔹primary health care, and 🔹response to violence against women and girls My deepest thanks to our 53 Member States, focal points, and partners for shaping and adopting this historic framework. With the renewed mandate, we will ensure that WHO/Europe remains your partner of choice — trusted, focused, responsive, and results-driven. Health leaders from the WHO European Region are gathering in Copenhagen 🇩🇰 – at UN City, from 28 to 30 October, for the 75th session of our Regional Committee - #RC75CPH. #RC75CPH is our Region’s annual decision-making meeting, bringing together health ministers and high-level delegates from all 53 Member States to set priorities, adopt decisions, and commit resources to improve people’s health. This year’s session is a defining moment for our Region, as Member States are expected to adopt the Second European Programme of Work (EPW2) - our health compass for next five years and beyond. #EPW2 focuses on strengthening health security, preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases, supporting healthy ageing, tackling the climate–health crisis, and shaping the health systems of the future – powered by two special initiatives on primary health care and ending violence against women and girls. And that’s not all. We’ll also launch new regional strategies – from promoting child and adolescent health to harnessing innovation for public health – and deepen partnerships to deliver tangible results, even amid geopolitical and financial challenges facing global health today. Stay tuned and follow me and @WHO_Europe for live updates and insights from #RC75CPH. For more information >> bit.ly/3J17zWV #HealthForAll

After 738 days of fear, uncertainty, and loss, the remaining hostages taken from Israel are finally returning home. The pain and trauma they and their families endured are beyond words. Healing will take time. May this moment mark the beginning of lasting peace, stability, and coexistence between the people of Israel and Palestine. We all know that the road ahead will not be easy. There is so much to rebuild – dialogue, trust, stability, hope for a shared future. Health will be part of the broader recovery process. Everyone, everywhere, should have access to the care they need. At @WHO, we stand ready to help – supporting mental health and psychosocial care for the former hostages and their families, and working with partners to restore health services for all those affected by the conflict. #HealthForAll #PeaceForAll (Images: BBC, Getty Images, Reuters)

A very welcome move towards peace. Every step that ends the suffering of civilians and brings hostages home honours the value of human life.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus@DrTedros

I welcome @POTUS’s announcement about the ceasefire in #Gaza and hostage release — it is indeed a big step towards lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. I hope all parties will respect the agreement, so the suffering of all civilians finally ends and all hostages are brought home respectfully. @WHO stands ready to scale up its work to meet the dire health needs of patients across Gaza, and to support rehabilitation of the destroyed health system. The best medicine is peace.

The Aral Sea – once the world’s 4th largest lake – now stands as one of the greatest environmental disasters of our time. With just 15% of its waters left, the consequences for people’s health are profound and demand urgent attention & investment. At #UNGA, I met with the Health Ministers of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, Ms Alkmaral Alnazarova and Mr Asilbek Khudayarov. We agreed to launch a project to assess the health impacts of this catastrophe and find ways to ease the heavy burden of disease in the Aral Sea region. Our joint work will focus on heat-related health risks, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, resilient health systems, chemical pollution, and the mental health of local communities. To take this forward, work has begun on a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministries of Health of #Kazakhstan, #Uzbekistan, and @WHO_Europe. #HealthForAll @KazakhstanUN @uzbekistanun

The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) plays an important role in strengthening primary health care (PHC) and advancing universal health coverage. In my meeting with WONCA’s incoming President, Prof. Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, and President-Elect, Prof. Pilar Astier, I thanked the organization for its leadership in family medicine worldwide. I emphasized that #PHC has a central place in the new European Programme of Work (#EPW2), where it will guide policies and actions across the European Region. We confirmed that we will keep working closely to strengthen PHC as the basis for better health in the Region. I also welcomed @WoncaWorld leadership’s strong interest in my flagship initiative on violence against women & girls, and we agreed to working together on this critical issue. #HealthForAll
