Happy to be at CHI to present NightLight along with co-first author @breda_joe on using smartphones to aggregate and map lighting conditions for pedestrians. Come to our session-"Social Good" Tuesday 4/29 at 9am to learn more and check out our paper: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/37…

@willigula @Qagggy 6 lanes of car traffic... Such a bummer because this would have been a great opportunity to connect the Elliot bay bike path to the rest of the city.

@Qagggy I live next to it and was withholding judgement until it was closer to completion, but I'm afraid this is it, and it's sad. Photo from my roof just now:

In Washington State 85% of pedestrian fatalities do not involve drunk drivers, 96% do not involve speeding, and 77% do not involve distracted drivers. If the majority of pedestrian fatalities are due to drivers using the roads normally, maybe its time to rethink our road design.

@Qagggy Same criticism for the construction on 46th and Linden. All the sidewalks at this intersection were fully repaved and new curbs installed last year. a few months later they realized they missed the chance to install curb bulbs at this crosswalk and just added some white paint.

Using a standard curb bulb with a 30' parking restriction just seems odd.

@Boenau My city has a page on their website admitting that after a 3 year study they found no significant improvement in motorist compliance. After seeing this I find the use of these flags a bit insulting. seattle.gov/transportation…

I find that local gov staff share the same must-not-be-blamed" status as teachers. The anecdotes are "mine are great" in spite of evidence to the contrary. Any pedestrian flag setup should have a clarifying sign: "Because we couldn't do our job. Sincerely, Planning & Public Works Staff" Pointing this stuff out doesn't mean all local gov staff are failures. But ignoring their role keeps streets dangerous. Design influences behavior. Design your streets for safer driving habits.

@typewriteralley Yes, that's definitely a reasonable justification for delays. Though I am surprised that there wasn't a single bus on this, one of the highest traffic transit corridors in the city for an hour, even under these conditions. All while the real-time display said bus in 5 min.

@Spottnik @typewriteralley what is going on with this bus "rapid transit"? I had to pick up my roommate after he waited for the E line for nearly an hour after work.
