Big news: we are setting up a new non-profit organization to run bioRxiv and medRxiv. It's called openRxiv [no it's not a new preprint server; it's a dedicated organization to oversee the servers] openrxiv.org 1/n

🎉bioRxiv & medRxiv are now managed by openRxiv, a new independent nonprofit. This transition allows for more flexibility and innovation. Our community-centered mission remains being a free service to authors ensuring rapid sharing of scientific information before peer review. 🧵

OK PubMed is down It's run by the NIH and the main way to search for academic papers. If this isn't a temporary thing , and is a Trump/Musk doing, academics around the world are royally screwed right now.

As the public's relationship with cannabis changes, so should national policy. Again, we call on public health officials to do more to educate the public on the potential harms of cannabis use, especially on the brain 🧠 Read about my work and the @theNASEM's report 👇🏾
Mount Sinai Psychiatry@MountSinaiPsych

Dr. Yasmin Hurd's research focuses on the impact of cannabis on neurodevelopment, especially among those at risk of substance use disorder. Now, w/ increasing potency & little regulatory oversight, her work plays a key role in a call for better education. reports.mountsinai.org/article/psych2…

@breenPsychGene @kyledcheney In thier first year they are paid by university funds thus this is a place universities can belt tighten to deflect fallout from indirect cost cuts

Lawyers for the government argued yesterday that the cap on NIH indirect costs would not cause “irreparable harm,”- Tell that to the grad students who would have been admitted at these places and the labs they would have joined! Grad students work hard, but claiming 80+ hours/week as the norm grossly misrepresents reality and risks normalizing burnout. For those applying to PhD programs: don’t be discouraged—successful research doesn’t require sacrificing your health or life outside the lab.
Vinay Prasad MD MPH@VPrasadMDMPH

There are too many bio PhD positions. Few of these graduates are able to obtain a PI position. Universities only train so many because they are cheap labor who will work 80 plus hours a week for 60 grand.

No joke - I must have hard coded every example from that book at least five times when I was learning - spent countless hours/days/nights. Now all you gotta do is ask #ChatGPT….

No shade to Andersen.Paak (nothing but hits), but Perl programmers have been belting out Hello, World! since the ‘90s if not earlier. #Coding #Bioinformatics

@mbeisen Publication costs must be massive. I’d love to see some source data on this…

Scientists and universities: defend indirects as a concept but not current indirect rates. Don't think there's waste in those numbers? We (US science) spend $4.5 billion on journals. That is HALF of the proposed cuts in indirects, and eliminating that spending would make science better!

Survivorship bias skews our perception of success—many who worked just as hard never made it. While effort and skill are essential, randomness plays a role. The lesson? Control what you can: cultivate expertise, adapt, and persist.

More than 40 percent of #postdocs leave academia. Those who landed a coveted faculty position were more likely to have had a highly cited paper, changed their research topic between their #PhD and postdoc, or moved abroad after receiving their doctorate. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… @PNASNews -> nature.com/articles/d4158… #ScienceCareer

It is with a broken heart that I share the news of the sudden passing of my dear friend and collaborator Daniele Di Marino, PI of @mollab_univpm. Daniele was a brilliant mind, a force of nature, and a generous heart. I will miss him enormously. Ciao Dani ❤️
