One of Huey Long’s pet projects of personal pride was a complete overhaul of #LSU’s marching band. At his direction, the university’s band nearly doubled in size, bought new instruments, and redesigned their uniforms. He even had Castro Carazo, the bandleader from his favorite New Orleans’ hangout — the Roosevelt Hotel — hired by #LSU as their band director. The Kingfish often led the Tiger Band at football games and Mardi Gras parades, keeping in step at the front with the drum majors he personally recruited to the university. His only selection criteria — they had to be the tallest boys he could find. Wanting a new song for the band to play, Senator Long called Carazo one morning with a new tune that he had come up with in his head. After a few minutes of Huey humming, singing, and whistling the tune over the phone, the band director got to work. His finished product, “Touchdown for LSU” delighted the Kingfish. To this day, it’s still The Golden Band from Tigerland’s signature song. #GeauxTigers #LaGov #LaLege
