Neo-Calvinism, Reformed ethics, and missiology for the urban ministry context. Near Westside of Indianapolis. Mostly quotes. Good vibes only.

“A commitment to historic Reformed theology and social justice? Yeah right! That doesn’t work.” Doesn’t it? A 🧵 1. The Westminster Larger Catechism, esp. Q. 122-149

Hero-worship is looked upon by the Calvinist as a heinous sin; and whether the Persian despot called himself the sun-god... or whether the modern idea loses itself in apotheosis of the state, it is all the same. A true Calvinist will never be an accomplice in any such abhorrent wickedness as this. Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: The Origin and Safeguard of our Constitutional Liberties

The phrase "the same thing" implies that they must accommodate themselves to each other. Hence the beginning of love is harmony of views, but that is not sufficient, unless men's hearts are at the same time joined together in mutual affection. On Phil. 2:2

How great a blessing unity in the church is, and pastors should be zealous to secure it... [The Pastor] should have no hesitation in transforming himself, as he may perceive that this will be for the advantage of the Church. John Calvin, Phil. 2:1

There are two dangerous pests that disturb the peace of the church. Strife is awakened when every one is prepared to maintain pertinaciously his own opinion. Vain-glory tickles men's minds, so that every one is delighted with his own inventions. John Calvin, Phil. 2:3

He condescended to make Himself manifest to the outward eye of those whose inward sight is weak and dim. Not then in the sense of traversing space, but because He appeared to mortal men in the form of mortal flesh, He is said to have come to us. For He came to a place where He had always been. Augustine, OCD, 1.12.12

@DannyMorgan0 Yep, certainly part of it. Our more conservative denoms have claimed to fight against theological liberalism, but so far, we have been unwilling to disentangle ourselves from two of its greatest idols: hyper-individualism and racial capitalism.

@brheiny One of my professors in College, an LCMS minister BTW, would talk about the homogeneity of Sunday mornings and say, "Is the Holy Spirit racist?" He deeply lamented these statistics. And, he often blamed liturgical snobbery as the culprit. He was no liberal either.

When I was preaching once per month (or fewer), I would often spend at least 15+ hrs on a sermon. Now, preaching every week as a planter, that’s closer to 6-7 hours. My sermons are far less refined, but, IMO are better overall for four reasons: 1) I’m speaking more directly from the heart. 2) I don’t get lost in endless internal debates about what points/illustrations are best. I trust my instincts. 3) I’m less polished, which I think has made me a more engaging preacher. 4) I’m far more dependent on the Holy Spirit to direct me to what matters in the text. I’m curious if any other preachers have gone through a similar transition. What has been your experience?

The one thing that hasn’t changed? My sermon length! No matter how much time I spend in prep, I just can’t get away from the 32:30 sermon 😅😅😩😩
