@biologygoddess @frankwmoody Appreciated this blast from the past as time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future. (And just went for a bike ride yesterday!)

True. We also have to compete with hyper stimulated young people who are flooded with images and videos that are tailored to what they like. How do you compete with that? I think you need to make human connections that fill a different need. #sunchat

@mexusmx This is true. Boredom is often behind misbehavior. I find that very bright Ss will act out because they need to be challenged more. #sunchat

@mexusmx @CarlaMeyrink @thnorfar 👌 Thanks for asking, John. I agree: It's been a while as I haven't been prioritizing time here the same way I used to. I wonder, What have I been doing instead? Indulging other habits like reading, working, playing outside, some of which install me in a bubble of my own making!

Sometimes I see that behavior reflections or referrals are used as threats and children begin to comply so that they don't get "the piece of paper". #sunchat

@mexusmx @CarlaMeyrink Kids, yes, & grown-ups. Boundaries matter; some of those we set ourselves while others are collectively & continuously negotiated. Former regularly collide with the latter, too! One (re)starting point can be cards on the table -- as @thnorfar showed a few tweets back. #sunchat

@CarlaMeyrink That is definitely not the answer! I see kids on devices at the park, at restaurants, on planes… I get it helps keep them under control, but I do wonder the impact on attention and more importantly how they connect with others. #sunchat

@MrsKarr36 I observed a pro athlete lead a session for youth, & I noticed how he purposefully framed our time by co-creating *agreements* w/participants about our conduct. He distinguished agreements (mutually defined) from expectations (what one in power places on others). #sunchat

Morning, #sunchat. Long time, no see as I'm mostly a Twitter ghost nowadays, I'm Brian. I support MS students & staff at a K-12 public charter school in CO to grow our literacy skills. Anyone else amused by today's inadvertently connected threads: class mgmt & caring for strays?

I had a math teacher ask for recommendation of people to connect with math teachers pursuing different approaches to grading (standards-based, ungrading, labor-based, etc.) If you fit that category, would you reply to this tweet so this person can connect with you?

@thnorfar @susankotch Both descriptions can be true at the same time, of course. Literal + figurative is like writing's chocolate + peanut butter, two great tastes, etc.

Push this year has been small group. Training kids how to work independently while small group is happening takes time. For some classes, easier than others. I can't focus in small group giving kids deserved attention when worrying about the rest of them. #workingonit #sunchat

Ratio? As much as possible. Yet: Readiness of learners to carry that load independently or as part of a group varies, so planning for different & multiple on- & off-ramps, supports & extensions, is tricky best practice that relies on all other practices. #sunchat

Lecture/Notes has its place, but daily can be tedious UNLESS the lecturer has the personality to carry it (like storytelling to toddlers, you need to add to the show!). Not all people do. How much class time do we need to turn over to students each day? Ratio? #sunchat

Greetings, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I support middle-school students & staff at a public charter school in Colorado to grow our literacies. And just like that last plural noun, pedagogies, practices, & ways to teach are similarly multiple in my experience.

@teresamgross Here's an adult book recommendation for when you're ready: Bewilderment by Richard Powers. #pd4uandme To make the transition potentially smoother from YA to grown-up, it's got some Flowers for Algernon vibes :) #pd4uandme
