fun fact: the english word "clue" (originally spelled "clew") used to mean a ball of yarn or thread. it took on the sense of "a piece of help or guidance" because of the myth of theseus, who is guided out of the labyrinth by ariadne's clew.

Finally, I’m aboard the 14:35 Alvia train to Madrid in Confort class, which today involves a change at Valladolid. Staff call these trains ‘Patitos’, little ducks. I’ll let you work out why…

IBERIA EXPRESS… Leaving Portsmouth tonight on the midnight steamer for an appointment in Porto with a large glass of port. Here’s my plan for the next 9 days (there’s more method in my madness than there may seem, honest) 👇🏻

there's NO evidence that roman soldiers were ever paid in salt, despite the word "salary" coming from the word salt......i know, very strange to use a food-related euphemism for money. those mysterious romans!

there is a myth in europe that hedgehogs use their spines to carry fruit home. while this isn't true, people have believed it for millenia--in part because it's such a cute idea!! in honor of harvest season, here are my fave medieval depictions of the hedgehog harvest 🍎🍎🍎
