fun fact: the english word "clue" (originally spelled "clew") used to mean a ball of yarn or thread. it took on the sense of "a piece of help or guidance" because of the myth of theseus, who is guided out of the labyrinth by ariadne's clew.

there's NO evidence that roman soldiers were ever paid in salt, despite the word "salary" coming from the word salt......i know, very strange to use a food-related euphemism for money. those mysterious romans!

salt has literally never been "worth its weight in gold" or anywhere close !!!! in medieval england, it was cheaper than wheat!!!
