This is obviously a joke -- you can't reliably get 8%. But you can reliably get 3%, which is $15k/yr, or $1250/mo. It's NOT hard to live on $1250/mo, even in the USA. Once you get $500k, you're done if you want to be. Beyond that, luxury is all you're working for.

Why does no one ever seem to mention El Paso? It's one of the cheapest, safest large cities in the USA, it's got the weather people want, it's close to public lands in New Mexico. Great food, public transit, nice people. If I were looking for a hot-weather city, I'd go here.
