As a mom who has traveled from Newark to Cape Town with kids under 3 multiple times, here’s my take on a crying baby in a plane: 1. No one wants to hear a baby cry on a plane. No one. Not even the baby’s parents. It’s unpleasant and we all know it. Acknowledging reality isn’t “anti-child” or mean. 2. Sometimes babies cry on planes. It’s going to happen, particularly during the planes descent. It sucks for all involved—baby, passengers, and parents. 3. If you’re a parent and you have a screaming baby, you better be doing everything you can to sooth that baby. You brought the baby on the plane. You have an obligation to the baby and your fellow passengers to calm your baby. Fortunately, most babies will sooth fairly easily. 4. If you see parents legitimately struggling (I’m not talking about entitled parents who believe society should revolve around them at all times), smile and possibly ask if you can help. Being nasty isn’t going to help anyone.
