I was peering at some youtube RPG videos. The content delivery got me thinking a bit. Real RPG / D&D play is a Zero Hype Event. It is the exact opposite of what is pushed as marketing agenda, because it is home made fun. I think there is a huge disconnect between what we see in media with the big company pushing big image and sociopathic military grade enthusiasm. Then you get all the big accounts on social media and influencers spinning even more hype. Except, it's not real. Actually playing the game is just 2 - 7 friends getting together on a weekend. This is likely instead of going to the bar to get wasted. It is the exact opposite of what you are shown publicly. We might get some good food and things to drink too. Then we settle in for a few hours of quality time with friends. I would describe it more as an intimate gathering of friends. Sure we can be a bit intense about our love for the game, and things can get lively, but the experience is not like what you see in a TV commercial. No one is playing to the camera during a game session. If you did, you might not get invited back. I was tempted to put an image from a mainstream YouTuber account here, but it's not about any single one of them. I am just pondering how low key and thoughtful my game sessions are. There is no outward drama.
