Having viewed several angles of this shooting, as someone who is extremely pro-2A, I genuinely cannot understand what the justification could be. Considering it’s legal to carry a weapon in Minnesota, simply having one on you is not an excuse for law enforcement to use lethal force. In order for them to do so, he would have to have drawn the firearm, and I see no evidence that he did. One might argue that just reaching for it would be considered a threat to the officers, but far as I can tell, his hands were both on the ground in front of him. It does not appear there was a way for him to go for either his weapon or try to take one off any of the agents. Maybe the bodycam footage will show something we haven’t yet seen, but as far as what’s been released so far goes, this does not appear to be a justified use of force. That being said, the blame for this does not rest solely upon the shoulders of the Trump administration. For months, Democrat politicians and talking heads have been telling their supporters that ICE does not have authority over US citizens, which has made people think they can do whatever they want to obstruct agents. This is patently false, and it has now gotten at least two people killed. It is true that ICE cannot search your vehicle or person, enter your home, or detain you for issues unrelated to immigration or customs laws. They can, however, force you to move, detain you, or arrest you for interfering in the performance of their lawful duties. So, if you’re running a kitchen, and one of your employees is an illegal immigrant, they absolutely can enter your property, arrest their target, and detain anyone who tries to stop them. They also have the authority to establish a perimeter around their operation, and to order anyone breaching that perimeter to vacate the area. If you do not do so, they are fully within their legal rights to remove you by force. From what I’ve seen of this shooting, the inciting incident occurred when an ICE agent on that perimeter shoved a protestor out of the road. That protestor lost their footing and fell, at which point it appears that Alex Pretti, the man who was shot, stepped in between the agent and the protestor. Everything happens very fast from that point on, but it looks as though Pretti put his hand on the agent’s shoulder or chest to create distance. The ICE agent responded by pepper spraying Pretti, who then stumbled around and ultimately tripped over the other protestor who was still on the ground. It appears Pretti then tried to take hold of the other protestor for some reason, at which point agents swarmed him. Pretty seems to have tried to shove them away at first, but was overwhelmed and forced onto his hands and knees. As I mentioned, his hands look to be on the ground in front of him. He is in this position for several seconds before the agent fires his weapon. At point between Pretti being forced to the ground and when he was shot does it appear that he reached for a gun, or that he was even capable of doing so. In order to prevent this from happening again, two things need to happen. On the one hand, ICE needs to be much better about training their agents on justified use of force. They should only ever draw their weapon when in imminent danger, and this was not a situation where they had reason to believe they were. On the other, politicians and pundits on the left must stop lying to people about what ICE is allowed to do. If they have a warrant, they are no different from the police. You cannot obstruct them, you cannot put your hands on them, and you cannot do anything else you would not be able to do to any other law enforcement agent.

I have a take: What talking heads don’t understand is that college sports at its core is not about crowning a national champion. It’s about regional pride, beating your rival, and vibes. Those who disagree would be far happier covering the NBA or NFL.
